The Choices We Must Fairly Pay For: Opportunity Cost — Interpreting Life Decisions Wisely for Students

19 Juni 2025

"One life with infinite possibilities. Life is a choice, and you must make it right." Life is a series of choices. Much like playing a Rubik’s Cube or a game of chess, every individual is challenged to think strategically to achieve the best possible outcome. Behind each decision lies a consequence—and this is where the concept of opportunity cost becomes essential to recognize.

In general, opportunity cost refers to the value of the best alternative that must be given up when a particular action is chosen. This concept goes beyond finances—it encompasses time, energy, and even happiness that is sacrificed in pursuit of long-term benefits, such as choosing to study, work, or grow personally. Simple questions like, “Is it better to attend a seminar or go to a concert?” are real-life examples of how this consideration plays out, especially in the lives of students.

Beyond issues of efficiency and effectiveness, opportunity cost offers two important lessons:

1. Encouraging Rational and Visionary Decision-Making
In an era full of distractions and consumer temptations, the ability to distinguish between needs and wants is increasingly crucial. Students who understand this concept are more likely to think several steps ahead, manage their resources wisely, and prepare for the working world with principles rooted in efficiency and strategic thinking.

2. Raising Awareness of Self-Control
Resisting short-term pleasures—such as buying a new gadget or going on a luxurious vacation—can create space for long-term investments in personal growth. Though these choices may initially feel dull or unexciting, they often lead to more meaningful results when pursued with consistency and thoughtful time management.

For example, Imagine being at a large concert, surrounded by thousands of others singing with enthusiasm and joy. The experience is undoubtedly emotionally satisfying. But if that time were instead spent attending a seminar or engaging in productive work, the long-term benefits might far outweigh the momentary thrill. This leads us to a reflective question: Is short-term happiness worth trading for long-term benefit? The answer depends entirely on one’s individual priorities.

Understanding opportunity cost does not mean rejecting entertainment, being stingy or enjoyment—it means developing the awareness to discern when it's time to enjoy the present and when it's time to invest in the future. This mindset builds resilience and adaptability, especially for students who are shaping their life direction.

Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), as an institution that upholds visionary values, integrity, and professionalism, encourages its students to be not only academically excellent but also wise in making life choices. Through its Student Affairs Bureau, UNDIRA offers various programs such as webinars, soft skill training, and entrepreneurship and organizational development. Programs like PPK Ormawa, PKM, and P2MW serve as platforms for personal and professional growth, helping students use their time optimally.

Thanks to these initiatives, UNDIRA students grow not only within the classroom but also through meaningful contributions and achievements in various competitions, both at inter-university and national levels, through Student Activity Units (UKM).

Ultimately, a simple yet significant question arises: Do you want to feel comfortable now, or choose to be patient for greater happiness later? Generation Z—including UNDIRA students—has the opportunity to go two, even five steps further, as long as they understand the value behind every choice they make.
