On April 24, 2024, Indonesia once again commemorates National Transport Day, highlighting the development and history of public transportation in the country. Over time, public transport has undergone various revitalization efforts by the government to provide efficient, comfortable, and affordable services for the people.
This year's National Transport Day coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Commuter Line railway. Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, announced that Indonesia will soon operate its first domestically manufactured Electric Rail Train (KRL).
This milestone further demonstrates the government's commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure. To celebrate National Transport Day, the government has also made various public transport services in Jakarta free for the day.
Indonesia's public transport system currently comprises multiple services, including JakLingko, Transjakarta, Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Light Rapid Transit (LRT), and WOOSH—a breakthrough collaboration between Indonesia-China High-Speed Rail (KCIC) and the Commuter Line serving the Greater Jakarta area (JABODETABEK).
Additionally, cities such as Medan, Makassar, Palembang, and Bali have adapted their own versions based on Jakarta's public transport model, such as Trans Mebidang, Trans Mamminasata, South Sumatra LRT, and Trans Metro Dewata.
Public transport services are now well-integrated. Strategic transit hubs like Dukuh Atas in Jakarta serve as prime hotspots for commuters, connecting multiple transport modes, including Commuter Line, MRT, LRT, and Transjakarta.
Affordability has also made public transportation attractive, especially amid economic uncertainty and rising costs of basic necessities. With just an electronic payment card for tap-in and tap-out access, commuters can experience the convenience of modern public transport.
Accessibility and mobility for all, including individuals with disabilities, are emphasized through initiatives such as station attendants, wheelchair and walking cane rentals, and priority pins for pregnant women to ease seat allocation during their journey.
Public transport represents the government's early steps toward an eco-friendly lifestyle and reducing congestion in major cities like Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi.
The presence of public transportation also plays a vital role for students, as easy access influences their choice of higher education institutions. Addressing the need for quality yet affordable education, Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) provides options that are easily reachable via Commuter Line, Transjakarta, and JakLingko.
National Transport Day is more than just a reminder—it serves as a moment to reflect on achievements and challenges ahead. Through collaboration between the government, industry players, and the public, continuous innovation and improvements can ensure safer, more efficient, and sustainable transportation services for all.
