Reading the World: Together Opening the Window of Literacy on World Book Day

23 April 2025

Cogito Ergo Sum—“I think, therefore I am.” The concept of thought does not appear out of nowhere but is instead achieved through the learning process that one undergoes. Learning is a right for all members of society. Through learning, humans can acquire new information, which not only opens opportunities to understand how the world works but also allows the knowledge gained to be applied as a means of self-reflection.

With the spirit of literacy, UNESCO celebrates World Book Day every year on April 23, 2025. World Book Day is not only dedicated to students but also to the global community.

Despite the advancement of technology that provides supportive facilities like AI, which has the potential to create new challenges for learning and even reduce the enthusiasm for research, AI remains limited in its capabilities. As machines functioning solely to analyze and predict, AI-generated research outcomes are restricted to existing data.

At this juncture, books come into play as a medium of knowledge that not only expands horizons but also serves as a source of information with relatively high credibility. Books are credible sources of information and can sharpen analytical skills, especially for students looking to broaden their knowledge base.

According to Vice Rector II, Mr. Dwi Sapto Febriantaka, M.A., books are a medium that can boost creativity and sensitivity in observing the world. He adds that in a world prioritizing instant gratification, learning through books helps train focus and enhances human problem-solving skills.

Additionally, fiction books that narrate stories help train us to view the world from different perspectives. Experiencing diverse points of view allows us to appreciate characterization, thus fostering empathy and a sense of humanity. By dedicating time to learning, we can understand how the space around us operates.

Nowadays, access to books has been supported through various reading formats, such as e-books, libraries offering diverse book collections, and websites providing repositories of research journals accessible to the public. These developments support learning anytime and anywhere.

As a university that supports the advancement of literacy among its students, especially in this era of rapid acceleration, Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) contributes by providing integrated access to knowledge through facilities such as the Digital Library (DigiLib). Located on the 4th floor of Universitas Dian Nusantara’s Tanjung Duren Campus in West Jakarta, the UNDIRA library offers a wide range of book collections for its students.

Furthermore, the Digital Library (DigiLib) service created by the UNDIRA library facilitates easier access to literacy and research for students, both on a national and international level.

Reading books can broaden insights, shape character, and foster imagination and creativity. The reliance on technology will never replace humanity's curiosity for credible information. With literacy facilities becoming increasingly accessible to all members of society, let us revive the spirit of literacy by reading both physical and digital books. Greetings from Literacy.
