Cancel Culture and Cyberbullying: Importance of Empathy in the Digital Era

In today's digital era, social media has become a platform for everyone to express themselves. However, alongside the freedom of speech and information sharing, there are phenomena emerging among Generation Z, namely cancel culture and cyberbullying. Although they may initially seem positive or even constructive, society tends to use these cultures as weapons to attack each other, especially on social media.
On one hand, cancel culture is a societal response to tarnish the reputation of an individual or group based on their mistakes or associations. The targeted individuals or groups are subjected to bullying, humiliation, and exclusion from their communities. Cancel culture does not offer these individuals a second chance and shuts the door on opportunities for redemption.
On the other hand, cyberbullying is a form of bullying that occurs in the digital realm. Victims of cyberbullying tend to experience mental stress, anxiety, and even depression. Generally, cyberbullying culture does not have age limitations for its targets. Despite its often underestimated presence in society, cyberbullying carries significant consequences, especially for Generation Z in their teenage years.
To address the rise of cancel culture and cyberbullying, society needs to promote Empathy and Mindfulness. Empathy not only enhances social sensitivity among individuals but also improves personal well-being by fostering inner peace and harmony.
Moreover, people need to cultivate the habit of managing their emotions, particularly on social media. With the culture of viral digital footprints, society must increase awareness of the comments they leave behind.
As a university that upholds the values of Visionary, Integrity, and Professionalism - Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) emphasizes the importance of students maintaining professionalism at all times and in all places. Additionally, the Communication Studies Program at UNDIRA teaches effective communication practices to foster a conducive communication culture.
Cancel culture and cyberbullying will not end anytime soon. However, as academics, we can begin with small changes by bringing empathy into every interaction we have, both online and offline. Ultimately, it is our humanity that unites us.
