Various Ideas, Various Potentials: Tips for Choosing the Right Thesis Title

21 Februari 2025

A thesis is a scientific paper created based on literature research or comparative study of various problem areas, both theoretical and practical, such as policies and implementation. Theses can be found in qualitative form (understanding and explaining the phenomenon of a context) and quantitative form (explaining research data through mathematical data management).

Generally, choosing a thesis title is the most challenging part for students due to several factors such as:

  1. Reference Concerns

  2. Complexity of Research Scope

  3. Material Management Confusion

  4. Discussion Confusion

Finding and setting a title is essentially the most crucial step, as the title is the initial stage and the foundation of the entire thesis and its methodology. The complexity in creating a title that initially seems difficult can actually be found in the surrounding environment from the smallest things such as; management problems, social stratification, city planning optimization in regulating drainage, and so on.

A good title not only reflects the overall content of the thesis but also must have originality. This ensures that the thesis is relevant to the related field of study and reflects the authenticity of an academician in solving problems or contributing ideas.

Here are some considerations that can serve as a reference for students in determining their title:

  1. The title should be able to describe the final prediction and the content of the research argument.

  2. A good title is not only catchy or attractive but also clear, concise, and current.

  3. The title should reflect the tone of writing and the scope of the research. This is because, in general, the title is the "concept map" or blueprint of the entire discussion.

  4. The title must include important keywords to make it easier to find. This is very useful, especially if the student's research results can be submitted to the LLDikti or the Career and Alumni Bureau as a form of database storage.

To make it easier for students to choose the right thesis topic, here are some tips and tricks to help students propose their thesis up to the proposal hearing stage:

  1. Know Your Interests and Skills

Topics that match your interests and skills tend to be the main focus that students can consider. If students personally like the topic and are very curious about the root of a problem in detail, then creating a thesis title and directing the discussion will be relatively easier. This is because, through research studies that resonate with the curiosity and even hobbies of students, they will be able to find ways to maximize the quality of their research without any compulsion that can hinder their writing creativity. Besides, it is essential for students to ensure that they have adequate basic knowledge to develop their title arguments.

  1. Identify Problems Well

Look for problems around or related to your field of expertise. Observe your surroundings to find hot issues being discussed and problems that have not found adequate solutions. By paying attention to surrounding problems, not only will your thesis become a graduation requirement, but your thesis may also become a breakthrough for future researchers in the topic you discuss to provide comprehensive benefits.

  1. Conduct Initial Research on the Topic and Discuss with Supervisors

Research generally has an element of novelty or uniqueness. Before you set your thesis title, start by finding many reading references to find development gaps for future thesis arguments from what has been read. Besides, do not hesitate to establish good communication with the supervisors. Supervisors can provide perspectives you may not know and provide improvements so that your topic is more directed, making it easier to create the thesis.

  1. Choose the Right and Concise Title

Avoid titles that are too general or too long. With a specific and clear title, readers will more easily understand the core of your research. For example, if the topic is about social media, it is better to determine a specific platform or aspect to be studied. A specific title will also help you keep your research focused and directed.

  1. Adjust to Available and Accessible Resources

Make sure that you have adequate time, data, and resources to research a topic. One main problem that arises from general research, whether a thesis or scientific papers, is the accessibility of resources and informants. Students must be able to manage their time properly so they can complete their final thesis on the expected deadline. A convoluted title can easily mislead and even confuse the stages of writing thesis arguments gradually. Besides, considering the title will also affect the effort needed to determine the research method, potential informants required, the use of involved tools, and the calculation of your research budget. Choose a topic that not only has novelty and is realistic but also matches the available resources to avoid taking too much time and causing excessive pressure.

By knowing how to create a good title, not only can the burden on students be reduced in writing arguments, but the writing structure will also be more well-directed.

To optimize proper research writing techniques, UNDIRA also holds various coaching sessions for students and lecturers. The Career and Alumni Bureau of UNDIRA, as one of the facilitators of student research database storage, also plays an active role in storing the research results and works produced by UNDIRA students on its career portal platform.

This article is also hopefully also be able to be used for Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) students who are undertaking their final assignments or planning their written proposal of Student Creativity Program (PkM) activities.
