Combating Excessive Fear and Anxiety: Here Are 10 Tips to Boost Self-Confidence

08 Februari 2025

Mental health is something everyone deserves because having peace of mind allows us to live life more calmly. One of the biggest challenges in today’s world is anxiety. It has become a common issue, especially among young people, due to various internal and external factors.

Anxiety is a natural reaction when facing uncertain situations. Psychologically, it acts as a defense mechanism against potential threats. But when anxiety gets out of control, it can hold us back, damage relationships, and even lead to mental health problems.

Studies in social and cultural fields suggest that excessive anxiety often stems from societal pressure to meet certain standards. The expectation to always appear strong and in control can also make people suppress their worries. If left unchecked, anxiety and fears can limit one’s life, reduce overall well-being, and make social interactions feel overwhelming. That’s why learning how to manage anxiety and build self-confidence is essential.

Self-confidence plays a huge role in helping people overcome anxiety. When we feel confident, we can handle life’s challenges with a calmer mindset—something that’s especially important for young people who are shaping their futures. Here are ten strategies to help reduce anxiety and boost self-confidence:

  1. Get to Know Yourself
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. You can’t master everything at once, and that’s totally fine! Accepting yourself for who you are helps take off the pressure of always having to be perfect in front of others and yourself.

  2. Challenge Negative Thinking
Negative thoughts can feed anxiety. Try replacing them with positive affirmations. A healthy mindset makes it easier to be confident in social situations and when dealing with challenges. Not everything bad that happens to others will happen to you. Overthinking not only kills creativity and social skills but also affects how you see and experience the world.

  3. Don’t Fear Failure
Failing is part of learning. It doesn’t mean the end of the road—it means there’s an opportunity to grow. Getting constructive feedback from others can actually make you mentally stronger. Every mistake is a lesson, not a dead end.

  4. Practice Self-Compassion
Unlike simply rewarding yourself as a quick escape, self-compassion is about accepting imperfections and giving yourself space to grow without unnecessary pressure. This helps reduce anxiety about both the future and past mistakes.

  5. Limit Social Media Use
Cutting back on social media—especially content that makes you compare yourself to others—can boost mental well-being. Research by Vogel et al. (2014) found that excessive social media use is linked to lower self-esteem. The type of content you consume matters, too, since certain posts (like motivational quotes) can unconsciously shape your lifestyle and mindset.

  6. Set Realistic Goals
Adopting a growth mindset—the belief that skills and abilities can improve with effort—helps us accept imperfections and focus on self-improvement. Setting realistic goals also prevents burnout from chasing unrealistic ambitions. When your expectations are reasonable, you’re more open to feedback and less likely to be disappointed. Be patient—every goal has its own timeline.

  7. Surround Yourself with Supportive People
Having a positive social circle helps you feel valued and reduces anxiety. A supportive environment provides space to grow. Personal growth often starts with openness to social interactions, which can bring valuable experiences and insights.

  8. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness means being present in the moment without judgment. Regular mindfulness practice can increase inner peace, help manage emotions better, and make life feel more meaningful.

  9. Learn New Skills
Picking up new skills not only boosts self-confidence but also shifts focus away from worries to something more productive.

  10. Prioritize Needs Over Wants
Understanding the difference between what you need and what you want helps prevent unnecessary stress. Chasing trends or societal expectations can fuel anxiety, so it’s important to focus on what truly matters.

Anxiety isn’t something you have to just accept as part of life. By applying research-backed strategies, anyone can effectively manage anxiety and build lasting self-confidence. Self-awareness, social support, and structured psychological approaches all play a crucial role in overcoming anxiety.

To help students develop better personal branding and communication skills, Dian Nusantara University’s Communication Studies Program recently held a Table Manner Training Session. This initiative not only helps students refine their personal image but also teaches effective communication strategies. By learning to present themselves confidently, students can move past self-doubt and develop a stronger sense of self.

Hopefully, this article can serve as a guide for UNDIRA students to keep striving to become better individuals—not just for themselves but also for their community and country.
