Intersection of Creativity and Emotion: The Purpose of Writing alongside Its Benefits

20 Januari 2025

Human mind is a remarkable force. Through cognitive processes, humans are able to generate a variety of interesting ideas from topics they experience or know. These latent ideas can be poured into various forms of work, one of which is writing. Writing, as a form of expression, has become an essential part of human life, both in academic and non-academic contexts.

Since ancient times, humans have used writing as a means of communication. It began with wall carvings as a form of interaction between tribes, and the practice of writing has continued to evolve, particularly since the ancient Greek period. During the Renaissance, which marked the cultural revival, writing was no longer just used to convey information but also to create profound and philosophical literary works. Great writers such as Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, and Edgar Allan Poe introduced various literary movements that stimulated creativity and human expression through their works.

Entering the modern era, technology and artificial intelligence (AI) have simplified the process of writing and summarizing written works. Other applications include brainstorming assistance and language error checking. However, technology and AI cannot completely replace the human role in writing, especially in terms of the authenticity of the work and the potential for plagiarism, particularly in works protected by copyright or in academic writing such as theses and dissertations.

While AI can mimic the delivery of information, the complex human emotions reflected in writing—especially through stylistics (language style)—remain difficult to replicate entirely by machines. This is because humans can combine their life experiences to create writing that is more relevant and relatable to readers.

Writing not only functions as a means of communication but also as a medium for self-expression, offering various psychological benefits. Writing can be an effective way to manage emotions, providing control over feelings that are difficult to express verbally. Here are some benefits of writing for individuals:

  1. Reducing Stress:
Writing can serve as an outlet for thoughts and feelings that are difficult to express directly. Studies show that writing is a non-destructive activity that helps individuals manage stress. Through writing, one can transform personal experiences into inspirational works, as Franz Kafka did in his famous work Metamorphosis.

  2. Minimizing Memory Decline:
Writing also helps improve memory. By recording activities or information absorbed, individuals can organize and recall the information learned. Research by Van den Meer from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology suggests that writing strengthens the brain's ability to store memories, particularly by engaging the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for emotions and memory.

  3. Enhancing Communication Skills:
Writing enriches vocabulary and communication skills. By expanding understanding of words and their meanings, individuals can become more effective in conveying messages, both in oral and written communication.

  4. Increasing Social Connections:
Writing, particularly in the form of academic or fictional works, can expand social networks and create communities with shared interests. Published writing offers authors the opportunity to connect with others interested in similar topics, fostering beneficial dialogue and discussion.

According to Prof. Dr. H. Suharyadi, the Rector of Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA), academics play a crucial role not only in acquiring knowledge but also in advancing education. Through writing, academics can make significant contributions as agents of change in society. They can inspire creativity, foster empathy, and ensure the sustainability of humanity through the ideas they share. Writings also create a legacy that can be passed down throughout history to preserve humanity.

In support of writing literacy, the English Literature Program at UNDIRA provides opportunities not only to explore classic and contemporary literary works but also to understand the humanistic values embedded in those works. In-depth writings about great authors such as Shakespeare, Dickens, and Austen can inspire readers to appreciate the beauty of literature and deepen their understanding of life and humanity. This program not only provides academic knowledge but also equips students with critical and creative thinking skills, which are essential in facing challenges in the professional world.
