Starting Activities with Health: The Benefits of Warming Up to Face Challenges

06 Januari 2025

The proverb "prepare an umbrella before it rains" reflects the importance of readiness in facing various possibilities, whether in professional life or sports activities. Preparing yourself, including through warming up, is an essential step that is often neglected by some people.

In recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more Generation Z and late millennials have become active in sports. These activities include strenuous sports such as gym workouts, jogging, futsal, and badminton, as well as light sports like leisurely cycling and yoga. This trend is driven by increasing awareness of the importance of health amid a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating patterns. Other motivations, such as achieving "body goals" and productively filling leisure time, also contribute to this enthusiasm. However, the importance of warming up before exercising is often forgotten, whether in heavy or light activities.

Physical health influences the effectiveness of physical training. According to Kornelia Johana Dacosta, M.I.Kom., advisor of the Student Activity Unit (UKM) Pencak Silat and Head of Public Relations Bureau at Dian Nusantara University, warming up and consuming enough food before exercising are not to be underestimated. She emphasizes that warming up prepares the body, especially for young workers who spend their days in sedentary work environments. "Sudden muscle contractions without preparation can cause body imbalances, particularly in the respiratory system, muscles, and joints," she explains.

A similar opinion is conveyed by sports practitioners at Dian Nusantara University. Ariza Noor, M.A., Head of the Badminton UKM, asserts that warming up is not only important for the arms but for the entire body. "In badminton, comprehensive warming up helps prevent cramps that often occur after playing," he says.

Mochammad Gilang Fikri Pujangga, Head of the Futsal UKM, adds that although futsal focuses on foot coordination, the need for good stamina and respiration is crucial. "Warming up for 15-20 minutes before the match helps gradually raise the heart rate, allowing the blood circulation system to run smoothly and prevent early fatigue," he reveals.

Warming up is not only physical preparation but also helps the body adjust its stamina and energy output for intensive activities. With adequate warming up, the body's metabolism can adapt better, minimizing the risk of injury. Additionally, consuming enough food before exercising supports optimal performance and improves post-exercise recovery.

Dian Nusantara University, through its Sports UKM, not only achieves student accomplishments but also instills the importance of professionalism and health in every training. "Health is a right for every individual," says Johana. Therefore, awareness of the importance of warming up and sufficient nutrition becomes an integral part of efforts to maintain physical fitness.

Warming up before exercise is a fundamental step that should not be ignored. In addition to enhancing performance, warming up helps prevent injuries and maintains overall body health. In any activity, proper preparation is key to achieving optimal results. With this approach, the enthusiasm for exercising can grow in line with awareness of the importance of health and fitness.
