Minimizing Ambiguity and Errors in Thesis Writing: The proper Usage of Jargon

11 November 2024

In thesis writing, students must understand various academic rules to ensure their work meets established standards. Several aspects, such as avoiding excessive use of AI and choosing appropriate diction, are essential for aligning the thesis with clear academic guidelines. One area often requiring attention is the use of jargon—specialized terms in a particular field that may not be widely understood.

Jargon serves to simplify complex ideas, enabling concise communication. However, these terms often require further clarification to prevent misunderstandings, especially during thesis defense presentations. As noted by communication expert Syaiful Rohim (2009), effective communication is a dynamic process that must adapt to the context. Clear explanations can reduce the need for corrections and improve audience understanding of the topic.

To help improve some sections of thesis writing there are some advantages and challenges of using jargon in thesis writing, which include but are not limited to:

  1. Clarifying Complex Terms
Jargon helps writers convey complex, technical concepts more concisely. For instance, in a psychology thesis, terms like "cognitive dissonance" describe specific psychological conditions that would otherwise require lengthy explanations. The use of jargon in such cases aids comprehension for readers with foundational knowledge of the field.

  2. Writing Efficiency
Using jargon allows authors to save space and focus on key points. In a technical thesis, for example, terms like "structural load-bearing capacity" communicate technical concepts without extensive description, making the writing more efficient and direct.

However, several difficulties may arise during the process of thesis making due to the problems caused by usage of Jargons. These are a must-knows for college students in order to help guide them better towards better thesis-making progress.

  1. Reduced Clarity
Excessive or unexplained jargon can make a thesis difficult to understand, especially for readers unfamiliar with the terminology. Poorly defined terms may reduce communication effectiveness and obscure the essence of the research.

  2. Risk of Ambiguity in Terminology
Using jargon without in-depth understanding can diminish the academic quality of a thesis. Misusing jargon is common when writers attempt to appear professional, despite a shallow grasp of the terms. This not only undermines the writer’s credibility but also obscures the intended meaning, potentially lowering the assessment by faculty members regarding the student’s understanding of the material.

By understanding the proper placement of jargon, students can produce a thesis that is both effective and clear. While it is sometimes not recommended using Jargons during thesis writing, usage of jargon judiciously while being mindful of the audience is sometimes crucial in academic writing.

As a university that emphasizes professionalism, Universitas Dian Nusantara values not only efficiency but also communication effectiveness and coherence. With knowledge of effective communication and appropriate jargon usage, students are expected to write and explain terminology in their theses clearly, achieving the best possible outcomes in academic writing.
