The Meaning of the 96th Youth Pledge in the Eyes of the Younger Generation: Moving Forward Together for a Greater Indonesia

Youth Pledge Day, celebrated every October 28, is a significant moment for Indonesia, especially for the younger generation, to honor the role of heroes in the nation’s struggle for independence. This observance not only respects the nation’s history but also serves as a reminder that building a country requires collective unity. This year’s theme, Forward Together for a Greater Indonesia, emphasizes the spirit of unity that must remain vibrant, especially in the face of growing social challenges and a waning sense of nationalism.
The era of globalization and Industry 4.0 has introduced changes that lead young people to focus more on practical matters. Consequently, a trend of individualism and apathy toward social environments is emerging. With the increasing number of Indonesians seeking opportunities abroad, particularly due to economic and educational factors, this challenge becomes even more pressing. Yet, the Youth Pledge reminds us that in diversity, Indonesian youth can unite and work together to achieve the nation’s greater goals. The declaration of “One Homeland, One Nation, and One Language” symbolizes the solid unity of the country, a theme that remains relevant in navigating the shifts of the modern era.
Oktoristio, a fourth-semester Communication Studies student at UNDIRA, embodies this spirit of the Youth Pledge. According to him, this moment serves as a reminder for youth overseas to bring positive contributions back to Indonesia, showcasing their loyalty to the country. To him, upholding Indonesia’s good name is a responsibility to be maintained daily.
In a modern context, loyalty to the country means building a brighter future through contributions across various fields—technology, education, economics, and culture. Along these lines, Sadha Fauziah, a student from SMKN 17 Jakarta, emphasizes that the Youth Pledge revives the spirit of love for the homeland. For the younger generation, this love must be demonstrated through active participation in preserving and enriching Indonesia’s independence.
No matter where they may be, Indonesian youth have a duty to bring positive changes to their homeland. Faldhi Akhbar, another student from SMKN 17, views the Youth Pledge as a reminder to keep achieving and contributing to the nation, no matter how small those efforts may seem. Young people must see the Youth Pledge as an impetus to remain united in diversity, to love the country, and to actively support Indonesia’s progress.
Indonesia’s journey toward progress remains lengthy, with increasingly complex challenges posed by digitalization and globalization. However, the spirit of “Forward Together for a Greater Indonesia” brings new energy to society. With a sense of unity, the younger generation is expected to be not just witnesses but agents of change. The Youth Pledge teaches that progressing together means opening boundless opportunities, fostering creativity, and nurturing a deep love for the homeland.
Youth Pledge Day reminds us all of the strength that lies in unity and the boundless commitment to protect and build the nation. Amid a world in flux, the solidarity and loyalty embodied in the Youth Pledge must stay alive within every Indonesian youth. With the spirit of Forward Together for a Greater Indonesia, Long Live My Indonesia, let us realize a bright and sustainable future for this nation.
