Enhancing Writing Quality: UNDIRA Holds a Workshop on Effective Writing Techniques in Mainstream Media

On Friday, August 16, 2024, Dian Nusantara University held a writing workshop themed “Workshop on Effective Writing Techniques in Mainstream Media,” presented by Albertus M. Putut Prabantoro, S.H., M.I.Kom., a professional in Ideology at Lemhannas RI and a media practitioner. The event took place on the 6th floor of UNDIRA’s Tanjung Duren campus in West Jakarta. Organized by the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, the workshop was attended by lecturers from various study programs, including Communication Science, Management, Accounting, and English Literature. The workshop aimed to enhance the writing quality of lecturers, especially in today’s mainstream media, where many articles or news pieces are influenced by buzzer activity that dominates the majority of mainstream media.
In the opening remarks, Prof. Dr. H. Suharyadi emphasized that "everyone is thirsty for knowledge, especially as a lecturer who cannot escape the task of writing. All writings will eventually lead to scientific papers that can be directed toward Scopus or Sinta." He further elaborated on the importance of writing in mainstream media, stating that it provides individuals with the opportunity to gain recognition and enhance their credibility as writers.
He also added, "For a lecturer, writing is crucial because it affects the promotion of academic positions." He noted that the workshop, along with the application of the writing techniques taught by the speaker, would be beneficial in the long term.
It is well-known that writing in mainstream media involves using impactful keywords or topics to create and leave a lasting impression on readers. However, many writings may confuse readers. By understanding the correct writing techniques, a writer can produce work that not only enhances their social standing but also opens up additional career opportunities through the written works viewed by certain institutions.
During the material session delivered by Mr. Albertus, he highlighted that in writing, journalistic characteristics can be observed. A journalist typically works on News, Opinion, Features, and Investigations regarding specific events to develop their material, while lecturers focus on Scopus and various scientific journal publications. Despite these differences, both journalists and lecturers share a common concept in writing.
In the event, he delivered the material interactively, not only through knowledge transfer via PowerPoint slides but also by using video materials, which the lecturers later analyzed in 1,500 words in the form of a news article. This event allowed lecturers to present various ideas on how to approach themes with different titles. Through discussions on each lecturer's article development, they could identify which topics and material presentations aligned with the given video.
It is hoped that through this workshop, lecturers can develop their writing skills and learn how mainstream media writing techniques can be implemented to produce work that not only elevates the authors' status but also provides accurate, precise, timely, and non-subjective information.
