Diving into the World of MBTI: How Personality Types Affect Social Relationships

14 Agustus 2024

With the various colors present in the social world, there are several categories of individuals ranging from expressive people to the quiet ones. Along with the development of trends, there are some people who believe in a pseudoscience called MBTI. MBTI, or the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, is a personality identification test that is commonly taken by many adults and the majority of teenagers.

In the realm of personality assessment, there have been many theories categorizing humans into two types: Extroverts and Introverts. According to a survey conducted by JIBC in 2023, approximately 16-56.8% of the world's population identifies as Introverts, while about 50-74% identifies as Extroverts. In addition to the concepts of Extroversion and Introversion, which delve into the MBTI concept, this theory has also been supported by the Big Five Personality Traits theory, Neuroscience, and Sociology.

The MBTI itself was developed by Katherine Cook Briggs during World War II. The development of this instrument took place about 50 years ago, continued by Isabel Briggs Myers (Briggs-Myers and Myer, 1995:6). MBTI describes the contrasts that can be observed in a person. The theoretical framework of this theory was born from Carl Jung's theory regarding the psychological characteristics of humans and the functions that regulate human psychology: Sensation, Intuition, Feeling, and Thinking.

In Psychology, although Myers-Briggs can be categorized as pseudoscience, many institutions still use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator theory as material for student counseling or for job placement in various companies. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator has sixteen domains of information that can categorize someone after taking the test.

Knowing one’s personality type is an important asset and is a concept for forming a SWOT analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) that may arise in a person’s life. In the professional and academic world, this knowledge serves as an asset for individuals to develop their potential according to their affinities that align with their personalities.

In addition to being a learning point for individuals, this concept also helps one understand the characteristics of others and how to approach them, whether as friends or in a professional context. Understanding the personality types of others can enhance empathy and understanding in social relationships.

Within the scope of socialization, it is important to recognize that humans, as social beings, need time to engage in social activities. It cannot be denied that socializing has its own advantages, but in some selective samples, there are exceptions that indicate reluctance to engage in excessive social interaction. Furthermore, communication style is an important factor to consider when communicating, especially with different personality types. This is due to the disparity in perceptions regarding how someone receives a message conveyed to them.

The relationship of communication in social interaction can also be related to the theory proposed by Brown-Levinson, which states that in communication, especially in the social world with wide diversity, it is essential to maintain politeness and use language strategies in social interactions.

Moreover, understanding a characteristic can help in knowing the counterpart one is facing. This will certainly assist in certain social activities such as group work and negotiation because knowing someone’s psychological type will facilitate approaches to conflicts and environmental maintenance, thus achieving a cohesive socialization process.

Although knowledge of the Myers-Briggs theory is still debated in the psychological community, the implementation of this theory has been frequently used in various social circles, especially among Generation Z teenagers. Furthermore, with the existence of the MBTI theory, individuals are expected to understand their SWOT factors and develop them to focus on their personal growth.
