Sometimes What We Need Is Not Only the Courage to Move Forward, But Also the Courage to Be Honest with Ourselves
Life is not merely about having the courage to make decisions, but about how strongly we are able to carry the consequences of the choices we make in accordance with our own moral principles.
Honesty, as a fundamental aspect of humanity, is like gold hidden within the flow of a river—simple in appearance, yet immensely valuable in essence. Like a mirror, honesty has long been recognized as a small fragment that unifies human life, making us whole both in our own eyes and in the eyes of others.
Although honesty has been taught to us since childhood, over time its presence seems increasingly marginalized amid the noise and rush of modern life. Today, we tend to wear various “masks” to deceive ourselves as well as those around us. Ironically, this behavior is not always rooted in coercion or obligation, but rather in the comfort unconsciously created within us, which may eventually trap us.
From a medical perspective, dishonesty can also be traced psychologically. In several studies regarding the human brain, there is a part called the amygdala, which regulates emotional responses and how we react to our surroundings. When a person experiences psychologically traumatic events, the amygdala may remain in a constant state of alertness toward the environment, and this condition can persist over time.
This becomes a manifestation of a “defense mechanism” through dishonesty or lying—whether to conceal emotional wounds within ourselves or to protect ourselves from potential exploitation by others. At times, many of us may even set aside honesty in pursuit of personal satisfaction or comfort.
In addition, external factors and social stigmas often pressure us to suppress our emotions completely—whether sadness, anger, happiness, or even love. While concealing honesty through lies may be justifiable “under certain circumstances,” dishonesty can gradually erode our connection with others and even make us forget who we truly are beneath the countless masks we wear, leading to emotional detachment.
Sometimes in life, besides being courageous, we are also required to be honest both in our actions and in our thoughts. Honesty is, in truth, a micronarrative capable of opening a far greater universe within human life.
As stated in Surah At-Taubah verse 119:
يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَكُوْنُوْا مَعَ الصّٰدِقِيْنَ
Yā ayyuhalladzīna āmanuttaqullāha wa kūnū ma‘ash-shādiqīn
“O you who believe, fear Allah and be among the truthful.”
Through this verse, we are reminded once again that dishonesty is not a form of strength, but something that may ultimately lead our lives astray. Honesty, born from good intentions and practiced with wisdom and moderation, is the highest form of courage and the way we preserve our moral compass amid the dramas and trials of the world that often prevent us from being open and truly seeing the world around us—without masks concealing our genuine expressions.
At Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), students are not only given the opportunity to obtain quality education, but also to cultivate moral values grounded in the principles of Visionary Thinking, Integrity, and Professionalism.
Being honest and doing good may feel difficult at certain times, dear UNDIRA friends, but understand that honesty is not a burden—it is an opportunity to grow closer to God, to others, and most importantly, to yourself. For only through honesty with yourself can you truly improve, preserve your direction in life, and maintain balance both in this world and the hereafter.
