Shine Bright Like R.A. Kartini: Becoming Intelligent, Resilient, Courageous, and Conscientious Individuals in Society 5.0

20 April 2026

The progression of time inevitably plays a role in shaping and transforming perspectives across various aspects of life, both conceptually and practically. Among the many influences of this progression is how we perceive culture, social structures, values, and even equality itself.

As Indonesia approaches one of its significant historical commemorations, celebrated annually on April 21—Kartini Day—we are once again drawn into discussions and reflections on issues of equality, particularly concerning women.

According to various historical records, the journey of women’s struggles has been marked by numerous challenges and complexities. During the Jahiliyyah period, the era of colonialism, and the Victorian era in the 19th century, the majority of women faced severe limitations in terms of equal rights, including restrictions on employment and limited access to education and knowledge.

Over time, various movements began to emerge across different countries in support of women’s equality. Wesleyan College, founded in Georgia, stands as the first institution of higher education exclusively for women.

Movements that initially developed in the Western world eventually spread to the East, particularly across parts of Asia, contributing to shifts in the balance of power and advancing gender equality around the 1960s and 1970s.

In Indonesia, the struggle spearheaded by R.A. Kartini—through the establishment of schools—paved the way for women to claim their place alongside men as equals. Moreover, her enduring spirit has left a legacy that continues to inspire women to strive and persevere to this day.

Despite the modern era’s advancements in promoting dignity, accessibility, and equality, women still face a range of persistent challenges. In the context of Society 5.0, the notion of “overachievement” has become increasingly prominent. Success is often narrowly associated with busyness and material wealth, shaping societal expectations and, at times, driving individuals toward egoism and excessive ambition—whether for personal fulfillment or to meet contemporary standards of modernity.

In addition, threats within certain social circles persist through discriminatory narratives and behaviors that seek to undermine women and create discrepancies in how they are perceived and treated.

The prevalence of such discrimination presents significant obstacles to fostering an equitable ecosystem and may hinder the development of social environments that are safe, harmonious, and grounded in mutual psychological trust between genders.

In advancing the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Indonesia Emas 2045, the commemoration of Kartini Day under the theme “Contemporary Kartini: Empowered and Productive Towards Golden Indonesia 2045” serves as a reminder that Kartini Day is not merely a historical milestone, but also a call to uphold equality—both in discourse and in practice—in building an inclusive ecosystem.

Every woman, in essence, represents the spirit of R.A. Kartini in the modern era. Although Society 5.0 presents today’s Kartini figures with various pressures and complexities, it is important to remember that a person of integrity embodies not only resilience and productivity, but also a strong moral conscience. Kartini Day thus reminds us of the importance of creating inclusive, just, and sustainable spaces for women.
