Understanding CAPTCHA and Its Role in Information System Security

10 Desember 2025

Kawan UNDIRA must be familiar with a specific box that is mandatory to fill in when you want to log in to a website or registration page. Typically, this box contains an adjustable image formation or random text that you must retype—this is what is known as a CAPTCHA.

CAPTCHA is an acronym for “Completely Automated Public Turing Test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” It is an authentication program created to maintain the security of a site or verify Kawan UNDIRA when accessing personal accounts. The CAPTCHA system also functions to ensure whether the entity attempting access is truly a human user or a bot.

According to the Director of Information and Technology at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), Mr. Giri Purnama, S.Pd., M.Kom., CAPTCHA works by presenting puzzles randomly, making them difficult for computers or other automated programs to read. The system then performs a cross-check of the various answers provided.

"CAPTCHA is very useful for web security or login pages. Although sometimes troublesome for some people to fill out, it is highly effective in protecting accounts from brute force attacks and repeated login attempts by bots trying to guess passwords," he stated.

The technological scheme of CAPTCHA has essentially undergone repeated changes. This is because bots are constantly adapting to solve every new CAPTCHA puzzle. When a puzzle is successfully solved by a user, the machine collects and compiles the data so it can "train" itself to generate new puzzles.

Every puzzle provided will have a different combination for each user. This is because CAPTCHA fundamentally utilizes Machine Learning to learn the answer patterns of various users, allowing it to generate unique puzzle patterns in the future with varying levels of difficulty depending on the Web Developers. Imagine CAPTCHA as a Random Number Generator (RNG) capable of creating different combinations like in a video game. In short, Kawan UNDIRA, not only does AI protect us, but we are also indirectly training AI to secure our data better.

Furthermore, Kawan UNDIRA, CAPTCHA consists of several types:

  1. Text CAPTCHA Text CAPTCHA is one of the types most frequently encountered by Kawan UNDIRA. This type focuses on solving random text puzzles involving specific capitalization and even the use of numbers. Kawan UNDIRA must type them correctly to be verified by the system.

  2. Image CAPTCHA As the name suggests, this type utilizes the visualization of specific patterns or images for users. Users are required to select images according to given criteria so the system can verify their identity. Although the provided images or patterns are sometimes blurry or unclear, these puzzles are actually designed to deceive robots—examples include identifying images of specific animals, vehicles, or traffic signs.

  3. Audio CAPTCHA This type utilizes Text-To-Speech systems to convert text data patterns or sounds into lines of text that users must retype. The answer patterns are generally relatively simple. For example, if Kawan UNDIRA receives the prompt "type the number of 2 corresponding drum beats," three sounds will appear, and Kawan UNDIRA must determine which of the 3 examples provided is the correct answer.

  4. reCAPTCHA This is a modern method that utilizes Machine Learning to verify humans versus robots. Unlike simple CAPTCHAs, reCAPTCHA uses AI technology to learn answer patterns and users more accurately. Some aspects generally analyzed by reCAPTCHA include mouse movement, typing speed, click patterns, IP address, user browsing history, and user characteristics.

Cybersecurity is increasingly becoming a focus for various partners, in line with the rise of cyberattacks carried out by irresponsible parties. The presence of security technologies like CAPTCHA proves that the IT world continues to need talent capable of managing complex systems.

Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), through the Informatics Engineering Study Program, presents a study concentration in Network Engineering, specifically designed to produce competent experts in IT and website/server development. UNDIRA's Informatics Engineering curriculum is designed so that students not only master programming languages (coding) but also master overall server administration governance and robust network security.

Prepare yourself, Kawan UNDIRA, to become a superior and highly competitive IT professional with Informatics Engineering at Universitas Dian Nusantara.
