Behind His Passing Lies an Enduring Legacy: Commemorating the Death of Jesus Christ

03 April 2026

Each year, two days prior to the celebration of Easter—on April 3, 2026—Christians around the world observe Good Friday in solemn remembrance of the death of Jesus Christ.

On this occasion, Christians undertake Lenten observances, including a 40-day period of fasting beginning on Ash Wednesday and culminating on Maundy Thursday. This practice reflects a collective commitment to honoring the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. During this time, certain restrictions are observed, most notably abstinence from consuming meat within prescribed periods.

This historically and spiritually significant day marks the crucifixion and passing of Jesus Christ at Golgotha Hill in Jerusalem approximately 2,000 years ago, around 30–33 CE.

Following the betrayal of one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Jesus Christ was apprehended and subsequently crucified as a form of execution by Roman authorities, who perceived His presence as a potential threat to the stability of the Roman Empire at that time.

While this event may outwardly signify grief and loss, in essence, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ represents a profound act of courage undertaken to atone for the sins of humanity. Consequently, it is remembered throughout Christian history as the highest form of selfless devotion, from which the designation “Good Friday” is derived.

Moreover, beyond the death of Jesus Christ lies a deeply meaningful message and enduring spiritual legacy for humankind. As stated in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” This verse underscores the notion that even amidst adversity, there exists an opportunity for introspection and transformation toward a renewed and better life.

From a humanitarian perspective, no virtue surpasses compassion grounded in love and dignified justice. The self-sacrificial life and actions of Jesus Christ constitute a spiritual inheritance for Christians, guiding humanity away from egocentrism and apathy, and encouraging a renewed commitment to upholding human dignity and honoring all of God’s creation.

Departure is never truly final; for those we continue to remember, the knowledge and legacy they impart endure across time. In remembering the passing of Jesus Christ, we return once more to the solemn reflection of Good Friday.
