UNDIRA Student Analyzes Cinematographic and Semiotic Perspectives in JKT48’s Music Video Production

Video serves as a narrative medium that is highly regarded by the public. Due to its inherent nature as a visual format capable of conveying information seamlessly, video production has become a cornerstone across various industries.

However, from the perspective of the entertainment industry, a video functions not only as an informational tool but also as a medium for impression management. This is particularly vital in branding campaigns, where compelling visual presentation directly correlates with increased audience engagement.

Technical proficiency in cinematography and creative execution are essential for producing visual works that maintain public retention. Recognizing this, a student from the Communication Science Department at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) conducted a study on a music video by the idol group JKT48, specifically through the lens of cinematography.

Cinematography fundamentally involves the arrangement of settings and shot composition, which enhances the visualization of a message to make it more appealing to the audience. The psychological value embedded within specific shots can also serve as a distinctive trademark for viewers.

According to the UNDIRA student’s research, music video production integrates several critical elements to create an impression that is both informative and interactive. The study focuses on the principles of visual communication, primarily utilizing cinematography and visual design as supporting frameworks.

Previous research by Pratista (2017:146) explains that cinematography requires careful attention to supporting aspects, such as camera angles and shot distances, to create an immersive atmosphere. Furthermore, improvisations in camera movement, involving both primary and supporting cameras, contribute to a more dynamic cinematic nuance.

In analyzing the music video titled "Masa Depan Yang Menyilaukan Mata," the UNDIRA student identified 263 distinct shooting variations and angles from total of 133 scenes. This technical breakdown includes 94 instances of Eye Level Shots, 38 Big Close-Ups, 87 applications of Shallow Focus, and 44 Floating camera movements. The technical execution is further augmented by graphic elements, such as typography, in several scenes.

For example, beach settings utilizing group shots and bright color palettes were found to be pivotal in leaving a positive lasting impression on the audience. The study emphasizes that the high volume of shots and the inclusion of engaging visual effects are intended to create visual unity, thereby enhancing the audience experience and minimizing viewer fatigue.

From a semiotic perspective—the study of meaning-making through visuals—variations in background, graphic design, transition effects, and typography serve to strengthen the core message. These elements transform the music video from a mere visual communication tool into a medium that fosters emotional proximity with the audience. In conclusion, this in-depth analysis of JKT48’s music video demonstrates that cinematic elements and visual aesthetics do more than just convey abstract themes; they simplify the audience's experience while evoking subjective emotional resonance.
