Igniting the Fighting Spirit Amidst the Challenges of Modernity: Youth Move, Indonesia Unites
Friends of UNDIRA, we once again commemorate one of the most memorable days in Indonesian history. Every year on October 28th, we celebrate Youth Pledge Day. The Youth Pledge itself is a sacred day commemorating the birth of national consciousness and the Indonesian spirit in the fight for our beloved nation.
The Youth Pledge has three declarations, enshrined in the Second Youth Congress on October 28, 1928, which became the foundation for all young Indonesians:
-
We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one motherland, Indonesia.
-
We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one nation, the Indonesian nation.
-
We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, uphold the language of unity, Indonesian.
Referring to these three principles, we are reminded of our primary purpose as the Indonesian nation: to be responsible for contributing to the prosperity of our country. However, the development of the times, as we understand it, certainly comes with its own dynamics, especially for the younger generation today.
The current era of globalization creates unique challenges faced by the youth, particularly regarding technology and access to information. Although information and technological advancements can provide opportunities for the younger generation, they unfortunately also alter how young people perceive solidarity, steering us toward a mindset of individualism.
Furthermore, with the emergence of this mindset, we are also presented with the problem of eroding appreciation for our national culture. With the influx of information regarding trends on various social media channels, we tend to forget our obligation to guide Indonesia toward its golden era.
In truth, this is not an ideal way to build the nation in the long term. Although self-preservation is paramount in facing the era of globalization and its accompanying economic turmoil, we must remember that this nation belongs to us all. Individualism and instant gratification are not long-term solutions capable of guiding Indonesia to its golden era.
However, to realize Indonesia's golden era, we need a solid support system. The role of today's younger generation, especially in the academic world, is to strengthen this support system through a unified vision and mission: to revitalize our spirit to collaborate, create, and innovate.
In line with this year's Youth Pledge Day theme, "Youth Move, Indonesia Unites," the role of today's youth is crucial in advancing the nation. The youth are the architects of the next generation, tasked with building the nation sustainably, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
By understanding our role not only in implementing the Asta Cita but also in aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals, Friends of UNDIRA, you hold the key to the next chapter. With the 3rd Graduation ceremony approaching on November 1st, we place great hope in you, the younger generation, to continue strengthening the nation in the future.
Youth Move, Indonesia Unites! Together with UNDIRA, let us shine together in illuminating the archipelago.
