The Best Companions for Writing Your Thesis and Final Project: Getting to Know Mendeley and Zotero

22 Mei 2026

The thesis, the ultimate "final boss" for senior students before graduation, certainly has a series of aspects that must be carefully considered to ensure the writing and submission process yields the highest quality. However, upon entering the revision stage, you might find notes from your thesis advisor regarding inconsistencies in how your references are written.

This is where reference management becomes crucial in writing a thesis or other written final projects. References serve to provide credibility as well as reinforce ideas based on the information sources we use in our scientific papers. However, things will be more complicated, in line with the increasing difficulty level of your research.

When verifying the required information or when asked about it during the revision stage, out of the vast amount of materials used, how do we find it quickly? This is where proper reference management using tools like Mendeley and Zotero is needed.

Mendeley is a reference management application developed by Elsevier, one of the world's largest scientific journal publishers. Mendeley has evolved into one of the most widely used academic tools by students and researchers worldwide to map out references in your papers.

Mendeley works by creating a reference list according to the journal or reference data collected by UNDIRA friends. The application will automatically read the metadata—title, author, publication year, journal name, and so on. From there, Mendeley can automatically generate citations and bibliographies directly in Microsoft Word, in whatever format you need. Furthermore, Mendeley is considered to be more user-friendly.

Even so, if the inputted file lacks readable metadata, Mendeley won't be able to generate the reference list properly. Mendeley also requires you to have an Elsevier account beforehand, and it tends to have poor compatibility if UNDIRA friends want to switch operating systems. Mendeley also requires an internet connection to operate, so keep that in mind, UNDIRA friends.

On the other hand, Zotero is a version often seen as more flexible than Mendeley. Zotero is a reference management application managed by the Corporation for Digital Scholarship since 2021.

Unlike Mendeley, Zotero has flexible OS compatibility and can even be used via Google Docs. It is also Open Source, so UNDIRA friends can use plugins as desired. Zotero also allows you to grab references directly from the web.

Okay, now that we know about both tools, which one is more optimal to use? Well, it depends. In terms of ease of use, Mendeley has a more polished and intuitive interface. If you are using a reference manager for the first time, Mendeley feels more "friendly"—the design is clean, basic features are easy to find, and the PDF import process is very smooth. Zotero requires a bit more time to adapt, especially in the initial setup. But once you get used to it, Zotero is actually more powerful and flexible in many ways.

Ultimately, both Mendeley and Zotero offer a way out of the complexities of manually compiling a bibliography. Just adapt it to the working style of UNDIRA friends—choose Mendeley for ease and a more polished look, or choose Zotero for cross-platform flexibility and the freedom to install plugins as needed.

Don't let messy citations hold you back from your thesis defense. Try exploring both of these applications, find which one "clicks" best with you, and prove that compiling thesis references isn't as scary as it seems. Good luck on your final project, UNDIRA friends!
