Disaster Readiness, Safety First: UNDIRA PPPA Bureau Conducts Fire and Earthquake Field Training

Jakarta, August 29, 2025 - Recently, Jakarta and its surrounding areas have experienced several natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes. In response to disaster preparedness in accordance with Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental (OHSE) principles, the PPPA Bureau of Dian Nusantara University (PPPA UNDIRA) has successfully conducted disaster simulation activities. The event was organized by PPPA UNDIRA in coordination with West Jakarta Fire Department (DAMKAR) and DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) as expert personnel on Monday, August 25th 2025.
The event was attended by several UNDIRA teaching staff, where they learned about proper layout and procedures for handling specific disaster incidents. The event featured Mr. Alfian, representing the West Jakarta Fire Department, and Mr. Yahya, representing the DKI Jakarta BPBD.
Fire, commonly known as the "red rooster," is one of the disasters that can occur at any moment. Mr. Alfian, representing the Fire Department, provided several tips regarding proper and appropriate fire handling.
"Fires can occur due to either human negligence or natural factors. However, 80% of fire cases occurring in major cities are caused by humans, whether due to poor spatial planning or negligence. Therefore, in accordance with the Minister of Home Affairs Decree Number 364.1-306 of 2020, Guidelines for Fire Volunteer Development for civilians are required," he stated.
Mr. Alfian then continued with several other details related to Fire Department duties. Essentially, the Fire Department is not only responsible for fire handling. From flood evacuation, handling monitor lizards or other reptiles, to retrieving items that have fallen into sink drains, the Fire Department is the nearest solution for civilians.
Adding to the material provided by Mr. Alfian, Mr. Yahya then explained earthquake handling procedures in detail and provided safety practice guidelines when earthquakes occur.
"If an earthquake occurs, do not panic or rush out of the room. Besides panic, when running you may fall due to loss of balance. Therefore, calm preparedness is required, from taking shelter under tables to near pillars until the earthquake subsides," he said.
The socialization activity was then continued with field practicum held in UNDIRA's open parking area. The teaching staff had the opportunity to take turns extinguishing fires using burlap sacks and carbon-based fire extinguishers.
The PPPA Bureau's commitment to maintaining and safeguarding workplace safety foundations has always been their priority. With the implementation of integrated fire suppression training, it is hoped this can serve as an evaluation for UNDIRA in providing and responding to natural disasters effectively.
