From Makkah to Madinah, the migration (hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions was not merely a physical relocation—it was a journey that redirected the course of civilization and perspective. This historic event took place in Rabi’ul Awwal, 622 CE, and is now commemorated as the beginning of the Islamic Hijri calendar, which this year falls on Thursday, June 27, 2025.

The hijrah was prompted by the oppressive and unjust conditions in Makkah. Intimidation, boycotts, and violence from the Quraysh forced Muslims to seek a new space where the values of Islam could grow and be shared peacefully. Thus, hijrah became a symbol of courage, perseverance, and transformation rooted in a long-term vision.

In today’s context—especially for Generation Z—the meaning of hijrah remains deeply relevant. Despite being the most digitally connected generation, they face emotional pressure, value crises, and the challenge of discovering a true sense of self. The culture of instant gratification and social validation has created a form of digital noise—not in the literal sense, but in the form of distractions that obscure life’s direction.

Social phenomena such as illegal online lending and the “flexing” culture on social media reflect a social climate that often encourages impulsive behavior and the erosion of reflective values. This is precisely where the momentum of Muharram becomes vital—a call to migrate from stagnant habits toward a more conscious, value-driven, and purposeful way of life.

Interestingly, the word Muharram itself means "forbidden," referring to the prohibition of warfare during this sacred month. In modern times, war no longer only occurs between opposing sides—it often takes place within the self, through the struggle of self-control. The meaning of Muharram thus underscores the importance of inner restraint, calmness, and peace—values that are increasingly essential in a noisy and fast-changing world.

Hijrah also teaches us the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones. The Prophet and his companions faced immense risks on their journey, yet their courage and determination brought about transformative change for the world. This reflects the truth that genuine transformation requires resolve and the willingness to move beyond comfort.

To be a Professional is to act with discipline, competence, and dedication. Just as the hijrah was carried out with planning and courage, a professional student is one who works thoroughly, ethically, and is adaptive to challenges.

In truth, education is not merely a pursuit of grades or networking opportunities—it is a journey that shapes us into wiser, more grounded individuals.

The Islamic New Year reminds us that true change begins within. Hijrah is not only a historical narrative—it is also a call for self-reflection, to leave behind what weakens us and realign the course of our lives. With this spirit, let us make the 1st of Muharram a starting point for meaningful personal transformation—for ourselves, our communities, and the future of civilization.
