Keeping the Light of the Heart: Living a Life Full of Gratitude and Tawakal

26 Maret 2025

From a clear pond, murky water will not flow. Ramadan is a blessed month that teaches Muslims to guard themselves against negative thoughts and desires. Negative thoughts can arise from various factors, such as excessive fear, suspicion, envy, and resentment. Among those mentioned, "excessive fear" or paranoia can disrupt the flow of life and social interactions.

To delve into this issue, Ustadz Jalaludin Akbar shared a sermon during Universitas Dian Nusantara's (UNDIRA) "Sharing Blessings" event on March 18, 2025. He focused on a challenge faced by the younger generation: overthinking about the future or the past. This condition leads individuals to spend more time thinking than taking action. Moreover, excessive contemplation of the future and the past can disrupt concentration and cause faster burnout.

He added that humans often strive to be better than they were the day before. This drive is fueled by motivations such as ambition, fear of failure, competitiveness, and the desire to be their best selves for loved ones.

He explained that the Qur'an introduces the concept of "Tawakal," which refers to entrusting oneself to Allah SWT after making maximum efforts. All human endeavors can be overturned by Allah's will. Therefore, one should surrender all efforts to Allah SWT to achieve the final outcome.

Ustadz Jalaludin Akbar continued that practicing Tawakal can cultivate gratitude. Gratitude not only means appreciating all blessings received but also being fully present in every moment that unfolds (mindfulness). A grateful person does not let their mind wander while engaging in activities for themselves or with loved ones.

Additionally, Mr. Muhammad Hasanuddin Thoyieb, M.M., Deputy Rector III of Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), mentioned during a webinar with The New You Institute (TNYI), which specializes in leadership coaching, that human life consists of limited phases.

Humans are not born solely to exist in this world. In fact, everyone is born with their own vision and mission, as well as their allocated share ordained by Allah SWT. Therefore, individuals should maximize all efforts they undertake, both for themselves and others. Live your life according to your role, and remember that Allah SWT will determine the rewards for our efforts and hard work in His perfect timing.
