Theory or Practice: Which Should Students Prioritize to Learn? Here’s the Explanation

Concepts are the starting point, not the answer. As students, we are often surrounded by textbooks and a variety of learning materials. However, theory alone cannot guarantee a path to success.
A balance between theoretical learning and practical application is essential. Essentially, theory serves as an introductory framework that allows one to understand a topic more comprehensively. Although theory initiates the desire to learn, it risks being forgotten over time if it is not put into practice.
Theoretical knowledge is inherently limited because it is idealized and conceptual, often laden with the subjectivity of human thought. Moreover, theory functions as a guide to solution design, but not as the realization of the solution itself. Its relevance may diminish when faced with constantly changing real-world conditions. Therefore, claiming that a certain theory is absolutely correct depends heavily on the context, which can influence the arguments presented by all parties involved.
This is why field verification and the practical application of theories are indispensable. As a university accredited with the “VERY GOOD” rating and committed to knowledge and science-based education, Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) not only promotes visionary education but also upholds integrity and professionalism. Alongside traditional learning methods using textbooks and materials, UNDIRA students actively contribute to and implement their ideas in real-world scenarios.
UNDIRA also facilitates research programs for both students and faculty. One notable student research project, titled "The Green Revolution of Hydroponic Plants," demonstrates their dedication to advancing not only the agricultural sector but also societal welfare. Furthermore, various Community Service Programs (PkM) conducted by UNDIRA reflect an academic identity that extends beyond passive classroom learning to include meaningful contributions of time and effort for the greater good of the nation.
A tangible example of this is the Community Service Program entrusted by DIKTI in Cogreg Village, Bogor Regency, led by Mrs. Ari Apriani, M.M. The program, themed "Enhancing the Competitiveness of Kemuning Mandiri UKM Products," aimed to improve the local MSME industry by implementing product digitization strategies, utilizing e-commerce applications, and leveraging social media to boost sales.
The real world is rife with boundless dynamics, influenced by social, cultural, and psychological factors. Ultimately, the path to success cannot be confined by the limitations of NATO (No Action Talk Only). The aforementioned examples of research and community service activities by UNDIRA students and faculty highlight the benefits of practical application in realizing theoretical ideas.
In practice, individuals face unpredictable challenges and learn to adapt and find creative solutions that are often absent from theoretical discussions. Through hands-on experience, they also have the opportunity to learn from both successes and failures, building intuition, deep insights, and problem-solving skills that can only be gained through real-world encounters.
As wise students, mastery over multiple theories and good amount of practical implementations of studied subjects should be a top priority. The ability to apply knowledge and experience fosters wisdom, shaping learners into thoughtful and discerning individuals. For the younger generation, it is evident that experience remains the best teacher in life.
