The Importance of Community Service in Supporting Institutional Communication

30 November 2024

An institution inevitably engages in activities involving interactions with the community, whether through social aid initiatives or by providing education on specific issues such as the dangers of sexual violence or the importance of leadership awareness in organizational settings. These efforts are aimed at contributing constructively to society and are closely linked to the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Corporate Social Responsibility, in brief, refers to actions taken by companies not only to maintain their image but also as a form of positive contribution to societal welfare. According to Davis (1960), CSR and business planning are interdependent on the involvement of social interactions conducted by institutions.

The UK Government’s website explains that “Various policies can be adopted by companies according to the required urgency, aimed at building broader relationships with the community and related institutions to achieve cooperation.”

As a university committed to community service in accordance with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, Universitas Dian Nusantara regularly organizes webinars from various study programs, accessible to people from all walks of life. These activities are designed to make education more accessible to the public.

In implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) consistently organizes various social activities that benefit the community. One of its flagship programs is UNDIRA Berbagi Berkah (UNDIRA Sharing Blessings), held annually during Ramadan. Additionally, through the UNDIRA Peduli Korban Bencana (UNDIRA Disaster Relief) program, UNDIRA actively aids communities affected by natural disasters in Indonesia, in collaboration with the Indonesian Navy to ensure optimal delivery of assistance.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, UNDIRA demonstrated its care by initiating a social service movement that distributed food packages and masks to communities around its campuses in Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta, and Cibubur. Moreover, UNDIRA visited and provided social assistance to Panti Werdha Wisma Mulia in Jelambar, recognizing the significant impact of the pandemic on the elderly residents there.

Universitas Dian Nusantara actively fosters strategic collaborations with various parties, including Jatisampurna Hospital. One tangible outcome of this partnership was a blood donation event at the Cibubur campus, aimed at promoting social concern for public health.

Furthermore, during the Covid-19 pandemic, UNDIRA collaborated with the Jatisampurna Police Department to implement the Vaksin Merdeka (Freedom Vaccination) program for the community around the campus and the academic community of Universitas Dian Nusantara. This activity demonstrated UNDIRA's active support for government efforts to combat the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

These activities reflect Universitas Dian Nusantara's commitment and social responsibility towards society. Through these initiatives, UNDIRA not only upholds humanitarian values but also asserts its role as an educational institution concerned with the health and welfare of its surrounding environment.

As an institution guided by the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, Universitas Dian Nusantara actively involves academics and students in community service programs to improve the quality of life in society.

The programs of which include: Literacy Education: Offering training in education, financial, and technological literacy, Eco-Friendly Concepts for SMEs: Assisting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in adopting sustainable practices, and Rebranding and Product Digitization: Supporting brand identity development and utilizing digital technology to expand marketing reach.

Through these programs, Universitas Dian Nusantara continues to demonstrate its role as an educational institution that not only educates but also empowers communities, drives meaningful change, and creates sustainable positive impacts.

The implementation of CSR by Universitas Dian Nusantara is not merely about gaining popularity but represents a genuine approach to building equality and trust with the community. With a vision that prioritizes societal welfare, UNDIRA proves that educational institutions can contribute beyond education by fostering productivity and care to improve the standard of living through various social initiatives.
