Honoring Service, Celebrating Dedication: Exploring the Role of Educators in the 4.0 Era

The Social 4.0 Era brings new challenges and opportunities to the field of education. Amid advancements in technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), social media, and digitalization, the role of educators remains an irreplaceable cornerstone. While technology has simplified the teaching and learning process, it also has the potential to erode students' character and exacerbate psychological issues, particularly among Generation Z. In this context, teachers play a strategic role in guiding students to use technology wisely while upholding human values.
As we approach National Teachers’ Day on November 25, 2024, it is essential to revisit its history. This momentous day traces back to 1912 when indigenous teachers under Dutch colonial rule established the Association of Teachers of the Dutch East Indies (PGHB). Following Indonesia’s independence, this organization evolved into the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) on November 25, 1945. The establishment of National Teachers’ Day through Presidential Decree Number 78 of 1994 underscores the nation's commitment to honoring and supporting the teaching profession as a pillar of national development.
In the modern era, National Teachers’ Day is not only about symbolic recognition but also about reinforcing educators' dedication to tackling the challenges of the digital age. By integrating technology into education, teachers can foster constructive, collaborative, and interactive thinking. This approach aligns with the vision of Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, which prioritizes competence-based and character-driven education. Institutions like Universitas Dian Nusantara, for instance, actively support educators by providing adequate facilities and fostering an environment that encourages innovation and contribution, not just for students but for the wider community as well.
More than a moment of appreciation, National Teachers’ Day serves as a reminder of the importance of improving teachers' welfare. Support for infrastructure, incentives, and career development directly impacts their motivation and enthusiasm for teaching.
Amid rapid changes, educators remain role models who inspire students to dream, act with integrity, and reach their full potential. With unwavering dedication, teachers not only help students excel intellectually but also shape them into visionary, professional individuals who contribute to building a more advanced nation.
In the 4.0 Era, the role of teachers is to inspire, educate, and guide future generations to face global challenges while staying rooted in cultural and moral values. National Teachers’ Day is a reminder to continually support their service as the front line in creating a generation that leads the nation to greatness.
