Education for Voters: PANWASLU Holds Outreach Event for UNDIRA Students

20 September 2024

Jakarta, September 19, 2024—An event titled "Voter Education" was held, presented by the PANWASLU teams from the Kalideres and Grogol subdistricts and moderated by the Student Affairs Office of Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA). The event took place on the 5th floor of UNDIRA, attended by members of the BEM student council along with the PANWASLU Grogol team as guest speakers. Besides serving as an outreach activity to educate students about the electoral process, the event also provided an open forum discussion on how elections should be conducted.

The event began with a presentation on the concept of elections and the role of citizens in the process. Essentially, elections are a civic responsibility in the hands of the people, with candidates selected based on their ideas, track record, and ideology. Every citizen plays a part in choosing future leaders, and therefore, apathy toward participating in elections is discouraged.

As students are seen as "agents of change" amid rapid societal transformations, they play a critical role in observing societal activities and the changes that are either happening or will be implemented. With their tendency to study new theories and how to apply them, students often have a critical outlook on various social, political, and economic issues. As a group not directly affiliated with any political party, students can contribute to ensuring fair and impartial local elections and bureaucracy.

As informed agents of change, students are sensitive to injustices or imbalances in the political system. They have a platform to express their views on the work programs that will be implemented, ensuring the selection of leaders who can execute plans effectively. Additionally, their strategic position, free from political affiliations, allows them to maintain neutrality in elections.

During the Q&A session, several students from UNDIRA had the chance to ask questions about previous elections, raising topics like the stress and exhaustion experienced by field officers, as well as political issues.

An election is a key moment in shaping the future of the nation. Beyond fulfilling the duty to vote, it is important to recognize that the election results have long-term effects. Thus, wisdom and knowledge of political dynamics are crucial for everyone to possess.
