Recognizing Oneself in the Pursuit of Knowledge: Self-Awareness in Learning Processes

17 September 2024

Through learning, individuals can discover many things and sharpen their abilities by applying practical theories they have studied. Of course, learning activities must be balanced with learning character development, religious teachings, and adequate rest.

In addition to learning, one can engage in discussions to help map out the knowledge acquired. In learning, it is recommended to maintain an open mindset to accept criticism for self-improvement. During one of the "Hello Campus" programs held by Dian Nusantara University, Drs. Firmansyah reminded that knowledge can be pursued anytime and anywhere, with willingness being the key to improving oneself and others.

Beyond the enthusiasm to seek knowledge, one must also be aware of their limitations on how much they can learn at once, as a symbol of wisdom. In the book Living the Uncommon Wisdom by Paulus Bambang WS, it is explained that wealth, status, and knowledge only bring peace to those who appreciate and utilize the results of their learning. However, as we know, humans inherently possess a curious and opportunistic nature. In the book, he metaphorically advises:

"Man does not live by bread alone. Man does not find peace through material wealth alone."

There is an English phrase, "don’t bite off more than you can chew," which means not to overextend oneself. This idea can be applied not just to consumption but also to learning. Learning starts from a thirst for existing concepts that can be seen or felt, but one must understand their limits and focus on what they wish to achieve from their learning. This is closely related to self-awareness, where individuals take a deep look at their strengths and weaknesses as a foundation for personal growth, without feeling the need to follow in others' footsteps.

By recognizing personal limitations, individuals can understand their strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to avoid both internal and external psychological manipulation, as well as inner distress.

Living the Uncommon Wisdom also explains that contentment is one of the keys to seeking knowledge. "Enough" is a simple word to say, but challenging to apply. Contentment doesn’t only arise from mature thinking or precise calculations but also stems from a moral foundation, social sensitivity, and gratitude for the results achieved through perseverance.

The final point to consider when pursuing knowledge is to avoid thinking that learning is a step toward gaining validation from others. If someone seeks knowledge or achievement with the primary goal of earning external validation, they may feel unsatisfied with whatever they do.

"Success or failure, being a winner or a loser, does not start from competence or behavior but from the mindset one holds."

Learning, ultimately, should come from intrinsic motivation to improve oneself. In the end, pursuing knowledge requires individuals to be true to themselves. Recognizing weaknesses in areas outside one’s expertise doesn’t mean they are on the wrong path. Your weakness is your strength, and your strength is your vulnerability. Learning can be likened to a journey—when a weakness is revealed in a field where one is not an expert, learning at an appropriate pace serves as a form of personal growth, both cognitively and in character.

This is especially true for the new students of Dian Nusantara University, as your future reflects the focus of your learning intentions. Are you a student because you learn, or are you learned because you are a student? By embracing one of UNDIRA's core values, integrity, individuals will develop a wise mindset toward learning. For learning is a journey through life, and life itself is a lesson.
