The Spirit of Independence: Igniting The Spirit of Indonesia For a Golden 2045

16 Agustus 2024

In commemoration of the 79th anniversary of Indonesia's independence, the nation is currently in the process of realizing its future goals, particularly the vision of a Golden Indonesia in 2045. To achieve this vision, contributions from all sectors are necessary to turn this program into reality. However, this responsibility largely falls on the younger generation. According to a study presented in a survey conducted by The PIE Network, 71% of Indonesian youth choose to seek opportunities abroad or work overseas.

According to UNESCO, Indonesia ranks as the fourth most populous country in the world, with 50% of its population consisting of young people (Generation Z and Generation Alpha). A survey conducted by YouGov Omnibus indicates that the age range of 18-24 years is when the average Indonesian begins considering living or moving abroad.

With the growing trend of Indonesian youth opting to work and live abroad, another emerging issue is the declining birth rate since 2020, which stands at 2.18 Total Fertility Rate (TFR). This will directly reduce the income-generating capacity of Indonesia’s productive generation and indirectly lower the GDP, as a higher birth rate increases the population entering the workforce in the future.

This can enlarge the labor force and boost the country's economic productivity. Conversely, a low birth rate may lead to a future labor shortage, which can restrict economic growth and productivity.

According to a survey conducted by YouGov and quoted by The PIE Network regarding the emigration of Indonesian citizens, Europe is the most popular destination for Indonesians to emigrate, with 42%. This is followed by several other regions such as Asia (41%), Japan (14%), America (11%), Germany (9%), Singapore (7%), Oceania (3%), and Africa (1%). Many of the surveyed Indonesians want to leave due to the more promising living costs and wages (63%), and 56% of them expressed that they prefer more cohesive public transportation with better facilities.

According to the Operating Officer of AECC Global, Daryl Fong, Indonesians have several reasons for choosing to move abroad. He stated, “As the economic center of Southeast Asia and a country with a predominantly young population, the Indonesian government is advised to address the needs of its citizens by providing education standards comparable to those abroad.” Education here refers not only to academic education but also to moral education, as it is well known that Indonesia's morality is increasingly being sidelined with the advancement of the times.

This situation is indirectly supported by the public's lack of trust in the Indonesian government, which can be seen from the Javanese phrase quoted in Raymond Chin’s Video Essay, “Sabda Pandita Ratu Tan Kena Wola Wali,” meaning “Words That Change.” This phenomenon is no longer unusual in the eyes of the Indonesian people. Many government programs seem ambiguous or hastily implemented, reminiscent of the era of President Haji Muhammad Soeharto, who centralized Jakarta as the hub for various national needs and forcibly relocated people, leading to the peak of protests in 1998.

However, despite these issues, Indonesia has achieved many accolades in recent years, particularly in sports, as evidenced by the 2024 Paris Olympics. Indonesia ranked 39th in the final standings of the 2024 Paris Olympics, with notable achievements such as Veddriq Leonardo winning a gold medal in sport climbing with a time of 4.75 seconds, and Rizki Juniansyah winning a gold medal in men’s weightlifting, lifting a total of 354kg.

This year should already be a sign for the Indonesian government to address these sources of issues one by one. Through social reevaluation and improved domestic management, which will undoubtedly increase the country's foreign exchange reserves, the growth and appreciation of domestic industries will enhance the quality of Indonesia. With the development of resources and the optimization of robust governance, particularly with the new capital in Kalimantan, known as IKN, along with the development of renewable transportation systems that have been implemented in IKN, such as the Autonomous Train System recently inaugurated by President Joko Widodo this month, it is hoped that Indonesia's name will shine even brighter as it moves toward a Golden Indonesia in 2045.
