Important Terms that Students Need to Know in Making Thesis

12 Agustus 2024

A Thesis is a paper created by students or academics in order to publish research that has been carried out in order to get recognition, to fulfil requirements of graduation and rewards (in the context of scientific writing competitions). Thesis serve as a medium for disseminating new knowledge, innovations, and scientific findings to the academic and professional communities.

In making scientific papers, of course, there are several terms that students must know. Some of these terms can help the student process in assembling a concept map that will be used in research. This is because a research and the creation of Thesis have their own characteristics that make each journal unique to be examined, and some of the terms used will determine the research topic taken by the author.

Here are some terms that students should know in order to help in the process of making Thesis:

  1. Qualitative Data Collection Techniques

Qualitative technique is one of the ways used in collecting and presenting data by the author by conducting descriptive explanations without the use of numerisation. Qualitative emphasis is commonly used in psychological, social, and educational research that requires understanding the context and meaning of a problem. Qualitative data collection techniques can be done with ethnographic studies, case studies, narrative analysis, and interviews. Generally, this technique leads to an open-ended discussion.

  1. Quantitative Data Collection Techniques

Quantitative techniques are the opposite process to Qualitative techniques, where the author explains the results of his research with empirical data collection which means there is a demonstration of mathematical and statistical data. The survey results that have been conducted by Quantitative research techniques can also be generalised because the data provided is a collection of statistical and numerical data so that various interpretations can be drawn.

  1. Abstract

In Thesis writing, an abstract is a brief summary of an academic paper. An abstract includes the research objectives, methods, results, and conclusions in a bearable manner without the elaborate detail of a "sneak peek" of the research as a whole.

  1. Literature Review

The existence of a literature review in a Thesis has a function as an explanatory feature of the background of why a research related to the topic is carried out as well as a literature review of pre existing journals used as a reference for a currently on progress Thesis. The existence of a literature review in a Journal serves as a review of the shortcomings and strengths of previous research on the topic in question.

  1. Hypothesis

The term hypothesis explains the concept of drawing preliminary conclusions from the problems formed from the material collected either from previous journals or a public discourse so that several questions can be formed that can be discussed in the academic journal being created. The hypothesis serves as a guide that directs researchers in designing and carrying out research.

The hypothesis also serves as a supporter in building a theoretical framework. this allows researchers to map out what theories they want to use in the study. With a hypothesis, researchers have a clear focus on what they want to test and how they will do it.

  1. Variables

In research there is a mapping of data used so that an academic journal will be neatly arranged, this is a variable. variables refer to elements or characteristics that can change or vary and are measured in research to understand certain relationships or effects.

Variables are important components in research design because they determine what is being studied, measured, or manipulated. Variables can be quantities, qualities, or categories that are observed by researchers to test hypotheses or answer research questions. Variables themselves are divided into two categorisations that are intended in the presentation of data, namely;

  1. Free Variables

This type of variable is a category of data mapping that can be controlled by the researcher who can develop further effects on other problems or theories that can be linked.

  1. Bound Variable

A dependent variable is a presentation of data taken from the independent variable. If the independent variable contains discussions relating to cause-and-effect relationships, the dependent variable will analyse the data available from the independent variable as a form of research into the effects arising from the existing data.

By knowing some of these terms it is hoped that in working on their final assignments or research, especially Dian Nusantara University students will not be confused and face difficulties in determining the meaning of terms in working on their papers so that they can produce good riches in a timely manner.
