Students Must Know, Various Types of Universities Based on the Education System in Indonesia

Are you a student or a prospective student? You must know the various types of universities in Indonesia and how the education system works. This can make it easier for a prospective student to choose what type of college suits his or her interests.
Higher education is the fourth formal level of education after Early Childhood Education (PAUD), Basic Education (SMP and SMA), Secondary Education (SMA or SMK) which includes diploma, bachelor, master, specialist, and doctoral education programs organized by higher education, and has been regulated in Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System (Sisdiknas) and universities in Indonesia are divided into three types as stipulated in Law no. 20 of 2003. In Indonesia, universities are categorized into three based on the type of education offered, namely academic education, vocational education, and professional education.
The following is a more detailed explanation of the three types of education:
1. Academic Education
Academic education is higher education that is directed primarily at mastering and developing certain disciplines of science, technology, and art. Academic education includes Bachelor (S1), Master (S2), and Doctoral (S3) programs.
2. Vocational Education
Vocational education is higher education directed at mastering certain applied skills. Vocational education includes Diploma (D1, D2, D3, D4) and Bachelor of Applied (S1 Applied) programs.
3. Professional Education
Professional education is higher education after undergraduate programs that prepare students to have jobs with special skill requirements. Professional education is usually a post-graduate program that provides professional certification. And produces professionals who have competence in accordance with applicable professional standards.
This classification helps prospective students to choose the type of education that suits their interests, talents and career goals. By understanding the differences between academic, vocational, and professional education, prospective students can make a more informed decision in choosing a study program and college that suits their needs.
Then some of us must have questioned what is the difference between University, Polytechnic, Institute, College and Academy? Let's get to know the difference between the types of universities in Indonesia.
1. University
Organizing academic education programs from various disciplines by having several faculties such as those found at Dian Nusantara University which has two faculties, namely the faculty of business and social sciences with the disciplines of management, accounting, communication science and English literature. As well as the faculty of engineering and informatics with the disciplines of informatics engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering and mechanical engineering.
The university offers several levels of education such as Diploma III (D3), Bachelor/Strata I (S1), Master/Strata II (S2), and Doctorate/Strata III (S3).
2. Institute
Organizing academic and vocational education programs by having several faculties but from one discipline only, this is different from universities which have various disciplines. For example, Bogor Institute of Technology (ITB) focuses on the development of science and technology and Bogor Agricultural Institute focuses on agriculture, environment and life sciences.
The Institute offers several levels of education such as Diploma III (D3), Bachelor/Strata I (S1), Master/Strata II (S2), and Doctorate/Strata III (S3).
3. Colleges
Just like universities and institutes that organize academic and vocational education programs, but there are differences between the three, namely that higher education schools only have one faculty with several study programs. For example, the College of Economics (STIE) focuses on economics, management and accounting and the College of Health Sciences (STIKes) focuses on health education.
Colleges only offer education levels such as Diploma and Bachelor/Strata I (S1).
4. Polytechnic
Polytechnic is a branch of higher education that only organizes vocational education programs with various fields of science. If a university runs its education system academically, a polytechnic instead runs with a practical education system. For example, Politeknik Negeri Jakarta focuses on vocational education and practical skill development in various engineering and non-engineering fields.
Polytechnics only offer education levels such as Diploma III (D3) and Diploma IV (D4).
5. Academies
Just like polytechnics, academies also provide vocational education programs but only in one specific field of study, for example a secretarial academy that only focuses on developing the administrative and managerial skills needed to become a professional secretary, or a tourism academy that focuses on developing skills and knowledge in the tourism and hospitality industry.
Academies usually only offer Diploma III (D3) education levels.
Each of these types of universities has a different role and focus in Indonesia's higher education system. Prospective students also need to understand the differences between academic, vocational and professional education so that they can make more informed decisions in choosing study programs and colleges that suit their needs, interests and career goals.
