Mechanical Engineering and its Innovation Implementation in Modern Work Environment
Mechanical Engineering is a scientific field that studies the basic principles of physics for the analysis, design, manufacture, and maintenance of a mechanical system. After the industrial revolution in Europe, Mechanical Engineering began to develop as a science and grew along with the rapid development of physics. Mechanical Engineering majors implement the basic principles of mechanics and thermodynamics and apply them in the design, analysis, and manufacture of various machine systems.
There is also a part of Mechanical Engineering that studies Metallurgy. Metallurgy is an applied field of Mechanical Engineering that implements the concepts of physics (Thermodynamics) and metal chemistry, as well as the process of extracting, refining, and processing metals from mineral ores into ready-to-use materials.
Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy are two closely related fields in various aspects of industry and engineering. Mechanical Engineering focuses on the design, analysis, manufacture and maintenance of mechanical systems. In this process, material selection is one of the crucial steps that affect the performance, efficiency, and durability of the product. This is where the role of metallurgy becomes very important. Metallurgy, the study of the physical and chemical properties of metals and their alloys, provides in-depth knowledge of how metallic materials can be processed, improved, and applied in Mechanical Engineering studies.
Mechanical Engineering has a number of characteristics in addition to the concepts studied such as Thermodynamics and Mathematics that distinguish it from other disciplines. Here are some of the main characteristics of Mechanical Engineering:
-
Design and Analysis: Mechanical Engineering also includes skills in designing and analyzing various machine systems. This involves an understanding of the principles of efficient and safe design and the ability to use software and tools to analyze system performance.
-
Manufacturing Processes: Mechanical Engineering understands production and manufacturing processes to create efficient and reliable machine components. This includes knowledge of material processing, fabrication technologies, and production methods.
-
Emerging Technologies: The field of Mechanical Engineering is constantly evolving along with technological advancements. Therefore, Mechanical Engineering graduates must be able to keep up with the latest technological developments in fields such as robotics, advanced materials, and innovative production technologies.
-
Creativity and Innovation: Mechanical Engineering encourages creativity in designing solutions to complex technical challenges. Innovations in design, materials and production processes are key to improving the efficiency and performance of machine systems.
-
Application of Ethical Principles and Sustainability: Mechanical Engineering graduates are expected to apply ethical principles in their work, including a stake in the safety, health, and welfare of society. They are also expected to consider the environmental impact of the design and operation of machine systems.
This enables the development of advanced technologies such as electric vehicles, automated manufacturing systems, and high-precision medical equipment, resulting in innovations that drive progress in various industrial sectors.
Mechanical Engineering students are taught to develop a deep understanding of the latest materials, production processes and technologies relevant to industry. With a focus on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability, the Mechanical Engineering major prepares graduates to play a role in a wide range of industries, from automotive to renewable energy, as well as pursue careers in consulting, and research.
If you are someone who has a vision for technological development and curiosity about how complex machines work, then Mechanical Engineering is the right major for you to study. Mechanical Engineering has a job path that many companies are looking for, especially now that there are many expansion developments in Indonesia, especially in the New State Capital (IKN).
In the engine maintenance section, for example, which requires mechanics who are certainly based on Mechanical Engineering knowledge. Another example of employment available as an option for a Mechanical Engineering graduate is City Planning. The New State Capital is promised as a “Smart City” concept and IKN is planned to have cable channels, transportation modes and communication networks that are more modern comparable to foreign infrastructure.
In addition to the part that focuses on the development of a development plan and there is also a job as Quality Control which is tasked with checking an item before it is mass-produced to the public. For example, there are many technological developments that Elon Musk is focusing on such as Tesla Home and Tesla Truck. Many foreign companies are innovating towards technological development.
Mechanical Engineering is one of the applied sciences that is in demand in various fields of industrial research and development. Dian Nusantara University is an institution that provides opportunities for people to study this science. This study program aims to produce graduates who have a strong provision of basic engineering knowledge so that they are able to design, manufacture, use, analyze, and manage machines and systems related to machinery.
With the combination of visionary and innovative concepts of a Mechanical Engineering expert, many jobs will open up for Mechanical Engineering graduates over time and the demands of state development. This is certainly related to the vision and mission of Dian Nusantara University which is based on; “Global-minded professionals, to meet the needs of the industrial and entrepreneurial world based on Science and Technology in 2030”. Dian Nusantara University Mechanical Engineering graduates are expected to become visionaries who are experts in developing the country.
