Reflection and Meaning of the Struggle of Pancasila Birth Day

Pancasila comes from Sanskrit and means “five principles” or “five principles”. These five principles consist of: Belief in One God, Fair and Civilized Humanity, Indonesian Unity, Democracy Led by Wisdom in Consultation/Representation, and Social Justice for All Indonesian People. These five principles are considered the main pillars that govern the life of the Indonesian nation and state.
June 1, 1945 is the most important day for the Indonesian nation. The selection of this date as the birthday of Pancasila is the momentum of the session of the formation of the Dokuritsu Junbi Cosakai by Japan or what is now known as the Investigation Board for Preparatory Efforts for Independence (BPUPKI) in an effort to formulate the foundation of the Republic of Indonesia.
This body held its first session on May 29, 1945, and the agenda of the session was to establish the foundations of Indonesian independence. After a successful first session, Indonesia's first president, Ir. Soekarno, held the second BPUPKI session which was held from July 10 to July 17, 1945. This second session discussed the draft Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia as the foundation for upholding the country's basic law.
In the second session of the second BPUPKI, Soekarno conveyed his ideas on the basis of an independent Indonesian state, which was named “Pancasila”. Panca which means 'five' and sila which means 'principle and 'principle'. On this occasion Bung Karno also mentioned the five foundations of the Indonesian state which would later become the basis of state ideology, namely; 'Nationality', 'Internationalism or Humanity', 'Democracy', 'Social Justice', and 'Supreme Godhead'.
In order to organize the formulation of Pancasila and make a Constitution based on these five principles, the Dokuritsu Junbi Cosakai formed a committee called 'Committee of Nine'. It consisted of Soekarno, Mohammad Hatta, Abikoesno Tjokrosoejoso, Agus Salim, Wahid Hasjim, Mohammad Yamin, Abdul Kahar Muzakir, Mr. AA Maramis, and Achmad Soebardjo.
After going through several BPUPKI trials, Pancasila was finally ratified at the PPKI session on August 18, 1945. At the session, the existence of Pancasila as the foundation of the Republic of Indonesia was approved in the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution as the legal basis of the State of Indonesia. Finally, based on KEPPRES number 24 of 2016, June 1 is the most important day for the Indonesian people. The birthday of Pancasila has deep and important historical roots in Indonesia's political journey.
In the early days of Indonesian independence, the newly independent country was faced with the enormous challenge of building a strong foundation for a stable nation and state. As a result of the struggle and dialogue between national leaders and institutions that played a role in drafting the foundations of the Constitution, the concept of Pancasila was born as the foundation of the Indonesian state, which was announced on June 1, 1945.
Pancasila, as the state foundation and ideology of the nation, reflects the fundamental values that inspired the struggle for independence and the formation of national identity. The fighting spirit of the heroes who fought for Indonesia's independence was based on Pancasila values such as unity, social justice and humanity.
For the next generation, commemorating the Birth of Pancasila is not just about remembering history, but also reminding them of their responsibility to continue this struggle in a form that is relevant to the challenges of today. They must uphold the values of Pancasila in their daily lives, such as maintaining unity amidst diversity, fighting for social justice, and prioritizing humanity in every action. By instilling and practicing the spirit of Pancasila, the next generation can contribute significantly to building a more advanced, just and prosperous Indonesia, in line with the ideals of the founding fathers.
Pancasila as the nation's ideology and worldview, teaches us to always maintain unity, uphold social justice, and place humanity above all else. In facing global challenges and the dynamics of changing times, the spirit and values of Pancasila must continue to live in our every action and decision. Thus, Pancasila is not only a symbol of the past, but also a solid foundation for a more advanced, harmonious and equitable future of Indonesia. Let us make Pancasila Birth Day a momentum to renew our commitment in implementing these noble values for the glory of the nation and state.
