UNDIRA English Literature Study Program Visit to the Canadian Embassy

On May 2, 2024, Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA) English Literature Study Program students organized a visit to the Canadian Embassy. This visit aims to gain direct insight into the ins and outs of the Canadian state, find out Canada's diplomatic priorities, career and study opportunities in Canada, and learn about Canadian culture and society.

Together with two accompanying lecturers from UNDIRA English Literature (Mrs. Putri Ayienda Dinanti, M. Hum. and Mr. Wahyu Budi, M. Hum.), 20 UNDIRA English Literature Study Program students attended the Canadian Embassy office which is located at the World Trade Center I, Jl. Jenderal Sudirman, Central Jakarta. The UNDIRA community was warmly welcomed by a team of public affairs officers and diplomats of the Canadian Embassy.

A Canadian diplomat named Mr. Stuart Shaw then opened the event and introduced Canada's history, economic conditions, and relations with Indonesia. The students were very impressed with the uniqueness of Canada, which has two national languages, English and French. One of the highlights of the visit was to find out more about information on the exchange of Indonesian students to Canada. UNDIRA students were informed that Canada is very open to welcoming students from various countries to study, because according to them differences are beautiful. We can learn a lot from their culture, and vice versa.

UNDIRA students also had the opportunity to discuss and ask questions in the question and answer session given. In the question and answer session, eight of the students asked questions about Canada. Questions related to government, diplomacy, economy, and education were answered clearly. One of them was related to scholarship information and job opportunities in Canada. It was mentioned that students or graduates from Indonesia have a high chance of not only continuing their education, but having a career in Canada. The discussion was conducive and very enjoyable.

Next, students were invited to visit the 6th floor of the Canadian Embassy. On the 6th floor of the Canadian Embassy there is a reception area, meeting room, and lounge area which has the flags of Indonesia, Canada, and the flag of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or more popularly called ASEAN. UNDIRA students were given an explanation of each flag displayed there.

In addition to gaining a deep understanding of the country of Canada, UNDIRA students were very inspired by the Canadian people who warmly welcomed foreigners into their country. This visit not only gave them new insights into the country of Canada, but also provided learning about how Canadian residents can accept well visiting foreigners.

As a follow-up to this event, UNDIRA English Literature Study Program students are very enthusiastic about exploring the potential for collaboration between the Dian Nusantara University English Literature department and the Canadian side, be it in the fields of education, business, or other related fields. It is believed that this will provide benefits for both parties to help achieve the goals of innovation and excellence in the field of education.
