Integration of Sustainable Coastal and Flood Management

Key takeaways from the Webinar :

  • The integration of coastal management and flood control towards sustainable practices and environmental adaptation is an attempt to synergize strategies and actions in addressing two interrelated environmental issues. This includes coastal conservation and flood risk mitigation. There is a need for alignment between these two sectors to prevent conflicts of interest and contradictory actions.
  • The use of sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions can significantly reduce environmental damage while increasing resilience to climate change. Increasing community participation as well as stakeholder engagement in the decision-making process ensures the sustainability of the strategies implemented, encouraging wider acceptance and support within the community for such measures.
  • The purpose of this webinar is to provide insight into Civil Engineering with a specific focus on transportation - especially in relation to implementation methods in infrastructure works. This initiative not only served as a mechanism to introduce accurate and beneficial reflection techniques to the teaching-learning process, but also served as an evaluation tool to improve students' critical thinking skills. In addition, the event also discussed the challenges in implementing effective collaboration practices in education, research, and community service that can be applied in various institutions.
  • In her presentation, Dr. Evi elaborated on flood management strategies. She emphasized that sustainable stormwater management can effectively reduce flood risks, by incorporating 'grey' and 'green' infrastructure elements in the construction process. The concept of grey infrastructure entails massive structures designed to protect against flooding by minimizing its risk; this approach includes increasing the capacity of channels, dams, polder systems, and so on, which provide quick solutions to avoid or address flooding problems without changing the timing of flood peaks.
  • Mr. Mas Mera presented on coastal protection structures. To build effective coastal defenses, he emphasized on understanding wave transformation, wave refraction, and coastal currents at first. Ideal structures such as Gorins and Breakwaters can be an adequate solution for shoreline defense measures.
  • Given the importance of understanding the urgency of coastal area management and the impact of flooding on a regular basis. This webinar is expected to be an invaluable resource for faculty, researchers, students, professional associations and practitioners in fields related to the themes and topics presented. It aims to facilitate the implementation of civil engineering in infrastructure projects.
