Organizational Culture: Is It More Than Just a Formality, and Why Does It Matter?
Culture is a concept that shapes human behavior and gives rise to identity, both at the individual and collective levels. As a source of identity, culture can also be viewed as a legacy, something passed down from one generation to the next. This means culture is more than a collection of symbols or traditions. It is something that continues to evolve while preserving the values and legacies that are passed on over time.
In education and, particularly, the workplace, culture serves as a framework that is established and consistently upheld to guide and maintain organizational governance. This is what we know as organizational culture. According to Sarpin (1995), organizational culture is a system of values, beliefs, and habits that shapes the norms and practices necessary for effective organizational management.
At its core, organizational culture helps strengthen a work ethic grounded in integrity and professionalism. It provides individuals with a shared set of principles to guide how they perform their duties, behave, and even make decisions. In other words, organizational culture works like a compass, guiding and keeping track of each step so that everyone can move together toward a common, well-defined goal.
Beyond fostering alignment in the way people think and act, organizational culture also helps create a more effective and efficient working environment. A healthy organizational culture reflects not only strong management practices but also the ability to communicate effectively across different perspectives and interpersonal dynamics. This is because organizational culture plays an important role in gradually building a positive and supportive workplace.
Like the gears that keep a machine running smoothly and maintain its rhythm, organizational culture must bring people into alignment through communication. Effective communication helps establish a healthy organizational culture by encouraging mutual understanding. In turn, this builds trust, mutual respect, healthy boundaries, room for individual differences, and a supportive work environment. As a result, every member of the organization can feel safe while having the space and peace of mind to carry out their responsibilities. Healthy organizational communication is not simply about conveying rules and norms. It is also about navigating workplace relationships with consideration, balance, and mutual respect.
To put this into perspective, imagine a team with an official rule stating that working hours end at 5 p.m. However, an unwritten expectation gradually emerges: employees who leave at exactly 5 p.m. are seen as disloyal or lacking commitment. As a result, employees stay late not because they are being productive, but because they are afraid of being judged negatively.
In a healthy organizational environment, culture no longer feels like a burden imposed on employees. Instead, it becomes a shared understanding that everyone actively upholds, where compliance comes from understanding rather than fear. After all, strong organizational communication is not simply about establishing firm rules. It is about making sure those rules are understood, accepted, and sincerely practiced by everyone involved.
Being a good compass for everyone also means creating clear expectations and fostering healthy communication from every angle, even when it takes effort, Kawan UNDIRA.
