Jakarta, September 21, 2026 — Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), through its Institute for Research and Community Service (LRPM), held a Guidance Program for the Preparation and Registration of Patents for Research and Community Service Outputs at Universitas Dian Nusantara 2026. The program took place on Friday, September 18, 2026, starting at 9:00 a.m. and ending at Smart Classroom 504, 5th Floor, Universitas Dian Nusantara, Tanjung Duren, Jakarta.

The program featured Syah Alam, S.Pd., M.T., Ph.D., a lecturer in Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Industrial Technology, Universitas Trisakti, as the keynote speaker. A total of 20 participants attended, consisting of lecturers from various study programs at Universitas Dian Nusantara, representing both the Faculty of Technology and Informatics (FTI) and the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences (FBIS).

The program was officially opened by Dr. Ir. Erfiana Wahyuningsih, S.T., M.T., Head of the LRPM Bureau at Universitas Dian Nusantara. She expressed her support for the program as part of the university’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its research and community service ecosystem while promoting the protection of intellectual property within the higher education environment.

“This program is a continuation of our previous activities on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) awareness and the introduction of patent concepts. Thankfully, we have also received the university’s support to continuously facilitate the patenting of the works developed by our lecturers. We hope that after this program, all of you will be able to produce at least a draft for a simple patent, so that by the time of the upcoming accreditation process, we will already have patent drafts in place. We will also evaluate the submitted drafts so that they can be finalized for submission and reporting to the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI),” said Dr. Ir. Erfiana Wahyuningsih, S.T., M.T., on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Meanwhile, Syah Alam, S.Pd., M.T., Ph.D., as the program’s speaker, shared practical perspectives and experience with participants on the process of preparing and registering patents. Participants were also given opportunities to discuss and consult on their research and community service ideas and outputs that could potentially be developed into patentable inventions.

Beyond the presentation sessions, the program focused on hands-on guidance, allowing lecturers to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how to identify research and community service outputs with the potential to be developed into inventions and subsequently submitted for patent protection.

During the session, Syah Alam, S.Pd., M.T., Ph.D., highlighted several important aspects that need to be considered when preparing patent and copyright drafts. He explained that when developing a patent draft, lecturers need to clearly identify and map out the specific aspect of an invention they intend to protect, using a method known as parameter locking.

“I like to compare an invention to a bottle of mineral water. If I wanted to patent this bottle, I might actually focus on patenting its cap. Why? Because a patent draft is different from a journal paper. In a journal paper, we explain things in detail from top to bottom, covering everything from the underlying theory to the materials used. In a patent draft, however, we need to focus on a specific aspect of the invention, whether it is a particular function or component that has novelty or an element of newness,” said Syah Alam, S.Pd., M.T., Ph.D., on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Syah Alam also shared several useful tips for lecturers on finding references for patent and copyright drafts through the Google Patents platform. He further highlighted several technical considerations, including how to input and design patent drawings in accordance with DJKI standards and international patent publication requirements. He also emphasized the importance of using appropriate formal language, maintaining transparency and accountability throughout the drafting process, particularly when AI tools are involved, and ensuring that all administrative and substantive requirements are properly addressed to facilitate the examination and review process.

Syah Alam also provided additional guidance regarding applications for intellectual property protection for works outside the field of engineering. For such works, he recommended that applicants consider preparing a Copyright draft. However, if the creators still seek patent protection, such as for a financial monitoring system, the relevant study programs can establish interdisciplinary collaborations to increase the work’s potential for patent protection.

“For lecturers from non-engineering study programs, you can also apply for protection in the form of copyright, which provides a form of intellectual property protection alongside patents. However, if you have an invention that has a physical form and contains engineering elements, for example, in the field of fintech involving accounting and information technology, you can still collaborate across disciplines to pursue patent protection. From my experience, however, this process is not always easy, particularly because the contributions and involvement of everyone participating in the invention project need to be clearly and fairly allocated,” he added.

This program represents one of LRPM UNDIRA’s strategic efforts to encourage lecturers’ research and community service outputs to go beyond implementation and publication, advancing them toward commercialization, technology transfer, and intellectual property protection. Through systematic guidance, lecturers are expected to become increasingly capable of producing innovations with novelty, practical value, and the potential for broader development and utilization.

Through this initiative, the LRPM of Universitas Dian Nusantara remains committed to strengthening a culture of innovation and intellectual property protection within the academic community. Guidance on patent preparation and registration is expected to enhance the quality of research and community service outputs while encouraging members of the UNDIRA academic community to develop innovations that contribute meaningfully to society and support broader development.
