Dharma and Compassion Safeguard World Peace: Greeting Vesak Day 2570 BE With Kindness in Our Hearts
As one of the most sacred celebrations for Buddhists around the world, Vesak Day, also widely known as Buddha Day, is often associated with the values of self-restraint and wisdom.
However, beyond teaching humanity the wisdom to free ourselves from worldly temptations, the legacy of the Buddha also imparts teachings about peace, more specifically, how we may discover peace and preserve it sustainably.
Amid a world increasingly consumed by the pursuit of social validation, excessive ego gratification, socio-political turmoil, and moral decadence, Vesak Day 2570 BE (Buddhist Era) reminds us that true universal peace is not born through escapism or authoritarianism, but through the collective commitment of all humankind. The first change towards a better future begins from within ourselves.
This principle is deeply aligned with the concept of Dharma, a Sanskrit term rich in meaning and profoundly beneficial to humanity. Dharma refers to moral duty and signifies teachings that guide us in liberating ourselves from confusion and unhappiness, both of which are roots of conflict and therefore contrary to peace.
When the Buddha taught the Dharma, he revealed that everything in existence is interconnected, forming a network in which all beings influence one another. The laws of cause and effect (karma), impermanence (anicca), and non-self (anatta), when truly understood and practiced with humility and minimal ego, can free humanity from suffering and bring us closer to genuine peace.
Living our lives does not exempt us from suffering, nor from unintentionally causing suffering to other beings. Nevertheless, such realities should never weaken our awareness and responsibility to uplift and humanize one another.
The theme, “Dharma and Compassion Safeguard World Peace,” for this year’s Sacred Triple Vesak Celebration is not merely a beautiful spiritual slogan, but also a call to heal both ourselves and the world in pursuit of a brighter future.
The concept of Dharma reminds us that there are values far greater than the mere pursuit of personal truth, self-interest, or victory alone. Dharma teaches us that every action carries real consequences for ourselves, for others, and for future generations. Therefore, we must cultivate tolerance, harmony, and unity amidst this increasingly chaotic world. Make peace, not war.
