Research and Studies: Is Monodisciplinary or Multidisciplinary Better? Here’s the Explanation!

26 September 2025

Human beings are creations of the Almighty, endowed with reason and intellect. With a strong sense of curiosity and the desire to grow, comes the natural urge to learn. From this urge arises the pursuit of research and study to gain new insights.

But what exactly are research and studies? Both serve as the validation of phenomena or concepts that undergo a systematic and tested process of inquiry. The presence of research and studies strengthens the delivery of knowledge through scientific evidence. Knowledge and its dissemination, in turn, form the foundation of sustainable human civilization.

Furthermore, research also plays a crucial role in breaking down misinformation, misunderstandings, and confirmation bias regarding particular phenomena. Published research represents scientific credibility and reliability.

According to mr. Ir. Margono Sugeng, M.Sc., Vice Rector I for Academic Affairs at Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA), in one of his addresses at the Research and Community Service Institute (LRPM UNDIRA) seminar, high-quality research and publications are the backbone of the world.

Research can generally be divided into two types: Monodisciplinary and Multidisciplinary. Monodisciplinary research focuses deeply on a specific field of study and the particular aspects within it. For example, it may concentrate on Information Technology or building material studies within the scope of Quality Control.

On the other hand, Multidisciplinary research integrates perspectives from multiple disciplines to address a single issue. This approach tends to be more flexible and open, allowing room for other disciplines to contribute to the development of their own research within the scope of the initial problem.

With its flexible nature in connecting various fields, multidisciplinary research provides convenience for researchers. They are no longer burdened by time constraints or the mental pressure of relying on a single source of reference. However, while multidisciplinary studies open broader opportunities, one of their limitations lies in offering less depth when addressing highly complex issues. Monodisciplinary methods, by contrast, often yield sharper and more specific results.

That being said, both approaches play equally important roles and should not be seen as mutually exclusive. Instead, monodisciplinary and multidisciplinary research complement one another, depending on the purpose and context of the study.

In line with the existing resources and quality assurance systems for research—whether monodisciplinary or multidisciplinary—Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA), through its Research and Community Service Institute (LRPM), fully supports the implementation of research that is both insightful and rooted in integrity.

LRPM UNDIRA is committed to continuously enhancing research performance, both in academic studies and community service. It also places great emphasis on the quality of research publications produced by UNDIRA’s faculty, supported through regular seminars and monitoring platforms. Moreover, LRPM actively works to synergize the university’s flagship topics, ensuring that research and studies conducted at UNDIRA gain recognition both internally and externally.
