Maintaining Idealism or Maintaining Life: The Job Hugging Phenomenon in the Midst of Society 5.0

Fellow UNDIRA students, sometimes we often find ourselves considering whether we should work according to our passion and ideals, or based on how much benefit (experience or money) we can gain, compared to working according to market demands.
This consideration contributes to the emergence of "Job Hopping" culture. Job Hopping itself is a solution pursued to obtain better employment, wages, and work-life balance by 'jumping' between jobs. It's not surprising that resignation culture once became a hot topic of discussion and was associated with Generation Z.
However, in times when finding a job itself has become a challenge, fellow UNDIRA students, have you ever heard the comment: "Getting a Job in this Economy?" This expression represents a lament about the difficulty of finding employment nowadays. This is precisely why the currently trending phenomenon of "Job Hugging" has become so prevalent in society.
Job Hugging, or embracing one's job, according to Tempo's explanation, is young people's response to staying with their current employment. This phenomenon is actually based on the fear of difficulty in finding new employment. The surge of layoff waves, technological growth, and salary increases that are disproportionate to living costs tend to be factors driving young people to maintain their current positions rather than taking the risk of seeking new, uncertain opportunities.
Although there are seemingly simple solutions to address this issue, such as increasing wages and expanding job opportunities, the reality is not that straightforward.
There are two dilemmatic problems, particularly in social aspects. First, the high level of competency required is not proportional to the current educational development in Indonesia. This causes a scarcity effect in the demographic number of graduates provided, further widening the gap in workforce absorption.
Second, the large number of university graduates who are not properly absorbed into the workforce has created the phenomenon of degree inflation. Degree inflation occurs when various job fields begin requiring certain diplomas or degrees as mandatory qualification proof, even though they were previously unnecessary. Consequently, job candidates now face layered challenges: prospective workers now increasingly face additional difficulties not only in finding employment but also in pursuing education, considering the intense competition and graduation criteria at universities.
Therefore, universities have a strategic role in minimizing employment absorption anxiety. Besides opening opportunities to hone skills through internships aligned with competency and relevance, universities play a role in providing networking between companies and alumni for fresh graduates.
Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA) has established strategic partnerships with various trusted institutions, both domestically and internationally. This collaboration aims to prepare students who are not only experts in their fields but also ready to face industry challenges toward 2030.
