From Sketching Drafts to Construction: The Utilization of BIM in Building Design

04 September 2025

Dear UNDIRA friends, the rapid development of technology has also brought a significant impact on the world of Civil Engineering. Digital innovations through various software have revolutionized the building design process, making civil engineering work more efficient and accurate.

One of the innovations that has transformed Civil Engineering is Building Information Modeling (BIM). In this article, let us take a closer look at what the BIM system is and why it has become the preferred method in the field of Civil Engineering.

Unlike conventional 2D drawings on tracing paper or drafting sheets, BIM refers to a set of processes that involve the collaborative digital design, construction, and operation of building facilities within a project.

The BIM method covers drawing techniques, geographic information projection, spatial planning, scheduling, cost efficiency calculations, as well as mapping of material and energy components in a collaborative, dynamic, and comprehensive manner using design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Autodesk, and others.

Beyond its function as a design tool, BIM also offers broader capabilities. Through software-based design and mapping, UNDIRA friends can conduct quality control related to the durability and layout of the overall structure. The software provides simulations for various aspects of construction, including building structure, environmental safety, budget effectiveness, spatial arrangements, and material quality.

With these features, designers can freely create construction timelines from initial planning to demolition. This enables Civil Engineering students to understand potential risks from the design stage, optimize construction plans, and ensure that the final outcome meets safety and efficiency standards.

Moreover, BIM offers flexibility with its cloud-based nature, which allows users to work from anywhere. This is possible because data stored in BIM is automatically synchronized through cloud servers.

Although it may seem simple and appealing, BIM, like any design method, has structured stages to ensure that drafts and designs meet certain criteria before reaching the final stage.

These stages are known as the BIM Maturity Levels, which are used to measure the effectiveness of progress and collaboration in a project. Level 0 involves the creation of basic project information and details, Level 1 includes the conceptualization of 2D and 3D models using CAD software, Level 2 emphasizes the exchange of completed CAD models with stakeholders to align requirements, and Level 3 allows stakeholders to access and edit the design collaboratively before finalization.

In addition to the BIM Maturity Levels, there is also a process called Dimensions, which runs in parallel and encompasses the enrichment of the building model with additional project information—from design to long-term asset management. In short, this stage enhances the 3D model with various layers of information to support the longevity of the project.

This innovation requires future civil engineers to possess strong digital competencies in order to remain competitive in the modern era. This is where the Civil Engineering Department at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) plays an important role—not only equipping students with theoretical knowledge and practical construction skills but also integrating the latest technologies like BIM into the learning process.

With a relevant curriculum, experienced lecturers, and an academic environment that adapts to industry developments, UNDIRA is committed to producing outstanding Civil Engineering graduates who are innovative, competitive, and ready to face global challenges in the construction industry of the future.
