"Locking Memories," Opening the Heart: Literature, Love, and Humanity from the Legacy of Yudhistira Massardi

Jakarta, June 28, 2025 – Literature is the symphony of human life and thought, encapsulated in books—be it in the form of poetry, rhymes, or biographies. Indonesia is widely recognized for its culture and rich literary tradition, and among its notable figures stands the legendary writer, Yudhistira Ardi Noegraha Massardi.

To honor and delve deeper into his intellectual legacy, the Library Bureau of Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) once again held a book discussion event titled "Mengunci Ingatan" (“Locking Memories”), at the 6th Floor Auditorium, Tanjung Duren Campus. This occasion marked the third edition of the university’s annual podcast-style literary event series, which has grown into a campus tradition that celebrates literature.

The late Yudhistira Massardi, born into a large family of twelve siblings, was raised in modest circumstances. From a young age, he helped in his family’s business—an experience that shaped his independent and hardworking character. He began writing early, submitting short stories and essays to major national publications such as Kompas, Tempo, and Horison, before advancing his career as an editor and journalist.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Ir. Muhammad Hasanuddin Thoyieb, M.M., Vice Rector III of UNDIRA, stated that Yudhistira was not only a literary figure but also a close friend and inspiring mentor. "Literature is a reflection of the human soul—it’s not just to be observed, but to be felt. Literary works foster empathy and bring humanistic values to younger generations," he remarked.

He also expressed hope that such book discussions could be held twice a year in the future, with reading materials that may also be recommended by students.

A similar sentiment was shared by Mrs. Siska Massardi, the late writer’s wife, who was present at the event. She revealed that "Mengunci Ingatan" was Yudhistira’s final legacy—an intimate reflection of his thoughts, presented in a deeply personal format of a literary biography. The book not only contains chapters of his life, but also perspectives from those closest to him, including his friend and the book’s editor, Mr. Yanto Musthofa.

Mr. Musthofa admitted that compiling the book was a challenging process, particularly in balancing accessibility with authenticity. However, through collaboration and emotional connection, the book was finally published and has touched the hearts of many readers. He described Yudhistira as a broad-minded individual—one who could contemplate life from multiple angles and never ceased to reflect.

Several of Yudhistira’s works have even been translated into Japanese, owing to their deeply humanistic and universal appeal. “I write literature for myself,” was a mantra he often shared. For him, poetry and writing were acts of self-appreciation—a journey to remain authentic, while staying humble and receptive to constructive criticism.

The late Yudhistira also encouraged young readers to view the world honestly and reflectively through his works. "You only need to be yourself. You don’t have to be someone great or powerful to touch another person’s heart," he once said—a powerful quote that embodies his life principle: the courage to remain true to oneself.

The book discussion was warmly received by UNDIRA students. Lively conversations emerged around themes of family, love, and humanity that are intricately woven throughout the author’s writings. "Mengunci Ingatan" has thus become more than just reading material—it has opened a window into Yudhistira’s profound thought process and reignited a spirit of literary appreciation among the young academic community.
