Welcome, UNDIRA Students!: English Literature Students from UNDIRA Conduct a Study Visit to the French Embassy

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, students from the English Literature Program at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) conducted a study visit to the French Embassy in Indonesia, located at Jl. M.H. Thamrin Jl. Sunda No. 20, Gondangdia, Menteng, Central Jakarta. The visit aimed to explore French cultural characteristics, higher education systems, and national perspectives.

According to the Head of UNDIRA's English Literature Program, Mr. Todo Sibuea, S.Pd., M.Hum., regular study visits are organized for students and lecturers to various embassies of Indonesia’s allied nations. This initiative serves as a routine activity for the English Literature Program each semester.

The visit also emphasized the importance of understanding the identity of Indonesia’s partner nations while providing an opportunity for English Literature students to engage in discussions and conversations in English.

Another key objective was to introduce UNDIRA within diplomatic circles in Jakarta and foster collaborations between UNDIRA and embassies, creating opportunities for students to apply their academic learning in practical settings. A total of 74 UNDIRA students participated, representing English Literature, Communication Studies, Accounting, Civil Engineering, Informatics Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.

During the study visit, the French Embassy guided UNDIRA's English Literature students through various embassy facilities. The visit commenced at the cultural center's auditorium within the Institut Français Indonésie (IFI) building.

Madame Julie Duperoir, the Cooperation Attaché at the French Embassy, warmly welcomed UNDIRA lecturers and students. She delivered her speech in French, which was translated into Indonesian by Madame Mira, a Public Relations Officer at the French Embassy. Students were particularly impressed by the experience of hearing Madame Julie speak French firsthand.

Following the welcome speech, embassy staff provided insights into postgraduate and doctoral study opportunities available to UNDIRA students in France, along with various scholarship programs offered by LPDB and the French government. This information was met with enthusiasm, as students and lecturers actively engaged in discussions about studying and living in France.

After the auditorium session, the visit continued to the IFI library, where students received a warm reception from the library staff, who explained the available academic resources. Students also explored film and novel collections and enjoyed French-language video game facilities, including PlayStation and Nintendo Wii.

Mr. Todo Sibuea, M.Hum. then discussed potential collaborations with the French Embassy and IFI, such as inviting embassy or IFI representatives as guest speakers for literature seminars. The proposal was met with great enthusiasm, and IFI expressed a willingness to send speakers for academic discussions at UNDIRA. Following the visit, both IFI and the French Embassy expressed interest in visiting UNDIRA’s campus to further explore collaborative opportunities.
