Hard Work, Work Smart! Commemorating Workers' Voices Amid Changing Times: International Workers' Day

Without realizing it, we once again welcome National Labor Day, which falls on May 1, 2025. International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, is a moment that reminds us of the history and struggle of workers in securing their rights and well-being, both financially and mentally. In Indonesia, this day serves as a symbol of solidarity and collective reflection on the relationship between workers and companies.
Each year, Labor Day provides an opportunity to evaluate labor relations, reminding both parties of their respective rights and responsibilities. Ultimately, this awareness aims to improve productivity and create a better work environment.
This occasion also serves as a reminder of the spirit of workers’ struggles worldwide in demanding justice. However, new challenges continue to emerge in the era of globalization, such as the impact of AI threatening various employment sectors, as well as the imbalance between work hours, job roles, and initial job descriptions, which weigh heavily on workers’ minds.
Beyond these issues, the implementation of workplace culture known as the "palugada" phenomenon (a phrase meaning "whatever you want, I have") has become a hot topic, particularly among Generation Z. Amid increasing job insecurity and economic challenges, most workers must adapt.
Despite these concerns, there are important considerations. One idea that highlights the necessity of balance in the workforce is the principle of Diminishing Returns, which explains that excessive work hours or workload can actually diminish the quality of output. This trend is especially evident in the creative industry, where relentless pressure, such as "content milking" without breaks, weakens focus and creativity, ultimately reducing the quality of work produced.
Maintaining a proper work-life balance and ensuring fair payment amid pressing economic demands cannot be overlooked. Many workers often neglect the balance between professional and personal life, even though it plays a crucial role in preserving mental, physical, and emotional well-being—positively affecting long-term performance.
Companies that foster a healthy work culture benefit from employee loyalty and creativity. Therefore, creating a workplace culture that supports work-life balance is a vital investment in mutual success.
Labor Day is not only relevant for workers but also for educational institutions and students. The modern workplace is no longer just about technical skills—mutual respect for rights and responsibilities, strong work ethics, and adaptability are key to success. Moreover, as agents of change, students are pioneers who can shape and restructure policies that define the future of the nation.
Education plays a vital role in shaping students’ character, including their understanding of justice, workers' rights, and social responsibility. Students with integrity and moral awareness can create a harmonious, productive, and sustainable work environment. This spirit aligns with the values of Labor Day, emphasizing the importance of respecting workers' rights and collective welfare.
Labor Day teaches us that national progress cannot be achieved by one party alone. Collaboration among workers, employers, the government, and academics is the key to creating a fair and sustainable labor system.
