Understanding Various Perspectives: A Brief Exploration of the Effects of Acculturation in Life

16 Februari 2025

Culture is one of the foundations of societal movement. Through the presence of culture implemented by society, the identity of a country can be observed. By studying culture, one can enrich their life and broaden their horizons.

The era of globalization has opened opportunities for people to learn about various international cultures through acculturation, which is the process of blending or merging cultures between two or more countries by a specific group of people. Acculturation can also increase society's sensitivity towards other cultures as a form of self-reflection for both spiritual and emotional well-being.

For example, the majority of Generation Z and Generation Alpha often use a mix of Indonesian and English, known as Jaklish (Jakarta English). Jaklish is a daily language frequently used by the majority of young people in Jakarta. This phenomenon is a form of cultural acculturation.

Through cultural blending, society can not only improve public speaking skills but also enhance language skills professionally. Acculturation can indirectly increase cross-cultural understanding and strengthen social skills. Schools and universities that encourage acculturation can create inclusive and supportive learning environments.

When individuals or communities from different cultural backgrounds interact with each other, they have the opportunity to learn from one another, respect differences, and find common ground. Cross-cultural interactions can strengthen community relationships and build mutually reinforcing understanding.

With openness and curiosity among cultures, collaboration between artists from different cultures can produce innovative and thought-provoking works of art. Music, film, and literature often reflect the fusion of diverse cultures, creating works that are engaging and relevant to a global audience. Acculturation can also expand appreciation for various forms of art and culture.

Through cross-cultural exchange, entrepreneurs also have the opportunity to discuss business planning and their innovations. Multinational companies often combine management practices from various cultures to create a more effective and inclusive work environment. Furthermore, a diverse workforce can help companies understand global markets and enhance competitiveness. This can advance the SME trade sector. Through learning about various countries' cultures, business actors can adjust their export products to international market shares.

The Directorate of Innovation and Business Development at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), in collaboration with DISDAGIN Kota Bandung, has organized Community Service activities that encourage entrepreneurs' enthusiasm for studying foreign trade prospects and cultures. Sensitivity to the trade sector through acculturation can also impact UNDIRA students' education, where they can understand the role of culture in marketing and international preferences.

To broaden the understanding of international cultures, Universitas Dian Nusantara also supports learning through the English Literature Study Program. One of the activities carried out by the UNDIRA English Literature Study Program was a visit to the American Embassy, which broadened students' cultural horizons and invited them to discuss the philosophy between the two countries. The direct study activities conducted by the English Literature Study Program not only enhance students' knowledge of other countries' cultural perspectives but also train their sensitivity in understanding human characteristics.
