Doing Part As A Nation's Hero: Upholding the Spirit of Patriotism in Preserving Indonesia In Spirit of National Heroes Day

The independence we enjoy today is the result of our heroes' tireless struggles, reflected in events like the Battle of November 10, 1945, in Surabaya. When the Allied forces, including British and Dutch troops, attempted to regain control, the Indonesian people firmly resisted. This event has since become a symbol of the fight to defend the hard-won independence.
On October 27, 1945, Allied forces led by Brigadier General Aulbertin Mallaby entered Surabaya, demanding that Indonesians surrender their weapons and release prisoners of war. However, rejection of this ultimatum sparked a major battle in Surabaya, a historic moment of resistance that reached its peak on November 10, 1945.
For the younger generation, this spirit of struggle must be kept alive. Defending the nation does not only come in the form of military actions but also through preserving culture and national identity. Cultural preservation is a significant challenge in the era of globalization, where foreign influences can easily blur the nation’s identity.
Education about history and culture is an essential first step in fostering patriotism among the younger generation. By understanding local wisdom and the nation's history, a deep love for Indonesia will grow. This can begin with introducing traditions through various activities, such as cultural performances and discussions on history. Through these means, the younger generation’s knowledge of national identity will remain intact despite a rapidly evolving global landscape.
Additionally, appreciation for local creations and wisdom serves as a tangible form of national defense. This can be done by actively spreading knowledge and promoting Indonesian culture through various social and educational activities. Thus, Indonesia’s identity will continue to live within the hearts of the youth, equipping them to uphold the nation's sovereignty.
As agents of change, young people bear the responsibility of preserving the nation’s noble values. Dian Nusantara University, which emphasizes integrity-based education, plays a role in shaping individuals who embody commitment and nationalism. With strong integrity, students are expected to contribute to safeguarding sovereignty and advancing the Indonesian nation.
Defending the country is one of the most important duties for the younger generation. Although the roles of past fighters have come to an end, the spirit of preserving the nation’s image and pride will live on through the traditions passed down from one generation to the next.
