National Wayang Day: Preserving The Country's History and Culture Through Classic Art

November 7 is celebrated as National Wayang Day, an important moment to honor and preserve Indonesia’s rich tradition and cultural heritage. This observance is not only a recognition of wayang as a cultural symbol but also a crucial step in maintaining a classical art legacy that has existed for decades, even centuries.
National Wayang Day was first inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on December 17, 2018, through Presidential Decree No. 30 of 2018. Although it is not a national holiday, this celebration has garnered significant attention from the public and various institutions. This designation aligns with UNESCO's recognition on November 7, 2003, which officially classified wayang as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This acknowledgment marked an important milestone for Indonesia to continue preserving and developing wayang as an integral part of the nation’s cultural identity.
Wayang serves as an interactive medium that recounts historical records while conveying moral values, ethics, and life philosophies. From the Mahabharata to the Ramayana, wayang performances offer valuable lessons on leadership, kindness, and sacrifice. Through compelling dialogue and storytelling, wayang becomes not only a form of entertainment but also an educational tool for society.
One popular story in wayang is that of Gatotkaca, a figure known widely by the slogan "iron bones, wire muscles." This story exemplifies the spirit of sacrifice and humility, despite Gatotkaca being a warrior in the Bharatayudha war. His story teaches the importance of wisdom and open-mindedness, steering away from prejudice. These values remain relevant in modern society, which is often marked by instant gratification and the pressures of social and economic challenges, particularly among Generation Z.
Wayang also serves as a subtle medium for social critique, using local characters to convey aspirations and local wisdom, such as the characters Petruk, Gareng, and Semar. Socially, wayang helps strengthen kinship bonds through various community activities, often held during major events like village celebrations, religious holidays, or traditional ceremonies. These open forums create opportunities for people to engage in discussions and celebrate unity, reinforcing social bonds among individuals.
National Wayang Day serves as a moment to appreciate the enduring presence of this native cultural form and as a celebration of Indonesia's rich cultural heritage. It reflects a collective commitment to safeguarding and preserving it for future generations, especially in a time marked by an influx of foreign cultural influences that increasingly blend with Indonesian youth culture.
As students, upholding the integrity of education is an essential duty. Students of Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA), guided by the spirit of integrity, embody Pancasila values and hold a responsibility to preserve the culture and noble values of the nation. Through the art of wayang, the narratives shared not only serve to unify the nation but also represent a dedication to classical art that will be passed down through generations.
