Rekindling the Spirit of Hijrah, Embracing Change, and Shaping the Future Amid Today's Disruption

15 Juni 2026

Before long, Muslims around the world will enter a new chapter in their lives. The Islamic New Year 1448 AH will arrive on June 16, 2026, bringing with it a renewed atmosphere of reflection and commemoration that invites us to pause for a moment, look back on our journey, and face the future with greater clarity.

The Islamic New Year, commonly known as the Hijri New Year, historically marks the beginning of a new year following the month of Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic calendar. More than simply a change in numbers, this occasion is deeply associated with one of the most significant events in Islamic history: the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE, which later became the starting point of the Hijri calendar.

Beyond its historical significance and formal role as a marker of time, the Hijri New Year reminds us of a much deeper essence: self-improvement, reflection on life's journey, and the courage to embrace change.

In its truest sense, hijrah is not merely a physical movement from one place to another. It is a transformation of intentions, perspectives, and courage—a journey from what is familiar toward what is better. In the context of modern life, which continues to move at an extraordinary pace, the spirit of hijrah becomes increasingly relevant, encouraging us to explore different perspectives and discover renewed values.

The meaning of this journey is also reflected in Surah Al-Ankabut verse 20, which highlights the importance of travel and exploration in broadening our understanding and awareness:

قُلْ سِيْرُوْا فِى الْاَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوْا كَيْفَ بَدَأَ الْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ اللّٰهُ يُنْشِئُ النَّشْأَةَ الْاٰخِرَةَ ۗاِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

Qul sīrū fil-arḍi fanẓurū kaifa bada'al-khalqa ṡummallāhu yunshi'un-nash'atal-ākhirah, innallāha ‘alā kulli shai'in qadīr.

Amid the relentless waves of change and disruption that continue to reshape various aspects of life, challenges and setbacks will inevitably accompany our journey. However, obstacles are not something to fear; they are something to confront.

Just as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) left the comfort of Makkah to begin a new chapter in Madinah, we too are called upon to step beyond limiting habits and familiar boundaries.

Naturally, every challenge brings uncertainty. Doubt about moving forward is a deeply human feeling. Yet, if we truly desire something with sincerity and conviction, we should believe that as long as we maintain genuine intentions and continue to take steps forward, Allah SWT will open opportunities and guide us toward the best path. Not because the obstacles suddenly disappear, but because we have become ready to overcome them.

The courage to choose and pursue what is right does not come easily. It requires the courage to be honest with ourselves, the courage to leave comfort behind in pursuit of truth, and the courage to keep moving forward even when the road ahead is not yet fully visible.

Therefore, as we welcome the new year, let us make the Islamic New Year 1448 AH a meaningful reminder to rekindle the spirit of hijrah within ourselves—to dare to change, inspire change, and guide both ourselves and those around us toward a better destination.

Let this be a year of growth, transformation, and continuous self-improvement. True change never waits for the perfect moment. It begins with sincere intention, is strengthened by a courageous first step, and is perfected through unwavering perseverance.

Happy Islamic New Year 1448 AH. May this year mark the beginning of the best transformations in all our lives.
