Bekasi, September 11, 2024 – Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) Cibubur Campus, in collaboration with Jati Sampurna Hospital, Bekasi, successfully organized a blood donation event attended enthusiastically by students, faculty members, and local residents. The event was coordinated by the Student Affairs Bureau of UNDIRA. It took place on the 4th floor of the UNDIRA Cibubur Campus from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with a total of 112 participants, consisting of students and local community members.
During the event, representatives from Jati Sampurna Hospital explained several requirements for those interested in donating blood. Each donor was required to undergo a strict health screening process to ensure that the donated blood met health standards and safety protocols. According to the Public Relations and Marketing representative of Jati Sampurna Hospital, the screening process included a review of medical history, laboratory tests, and a physical check-up of the donor.
The primary objectives of the screening were:
-
Donor Health: The screening ensured that donors were in good health and that donating blood would not pose a risk to their well-being. For example, individuals with low or high blood pressure, anemia, or other health conditions might not be allowed to donate.
-
Preventing Complications: Factors such as body weight, hemoglobin levels, and medical history could affect the safety of the blood donation process, so only those who met the health criteria were allowed to donate.
-
Recipient Safety: The screening also aimed to detect infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis, which could potentially be transmitted through blood transfusion. This process ensured that the donated blood was safe and free from infection.
Additionally, women who were menstruating or pregnant were advised not to participate in the blood donation. A donor can donate blood once every three months, depending on their health and age. According to the guidelines from the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), regular blood donations allow the body to produce new red blood cells, reducing the risk of anemia.
After completing the donation process, participants were given a goodie bag containing light snacks to aid recovery and contact information for PMI to provide further updates on the donated blood.
Jati Sampurna Hospital emphasized the importance of post-donation screening to ensure the safety of the blood recipients, particularly in detecting any infectious diseases that may be present in the donated blood.
In interviews with several participants, including both students and members of the public, many expressed that this was their first experience donating blood. Although some donors initially felt anxious, the majority responded positively to the event. One of the UNDIRA Engineering students who participated expressed appreciation for the initiative and encouraged fellow students to take part in this beneficial social activity.
