Commemorating the Ascension of Jesus Christ and the Message of Resurrection

May 9th, is a day that leaves a special impression on Christians because it is the historic day of the ascension of Jesus Christ or Isa Al Masih. This day is a commemoration of 40 days after the resurrection of Jesus, and on that day according to history the disciples of Jesus saw him lifted up until he disappeared from sight because he was covered by clouds.
Quoted from several historical journals regarding the story of Jesus' ascension in Jesus and Muhammad's Isra'-Mi'raj: A Comparative Study by Santosa Irfaan that, the ascension occurred 40 days after Easter. Jesus was taken up to heaven supposedly after appearing on the Mount of Olives as part of the end of his journey.
With a bright spotlight streaming down from the sky, the ascension of Jesus exudes a spiritual wonder that enchants the heart of every Christian. As we reflect on this holy moment, our minds are filled with emotion and awe at the deep meaning behind his journey to heavenly glory.
In Mark 16:19, it states, “When the Lord Jesus had given the last message to his disciples, he was taken up into heaven and seated at the right hand of God”. Jesus' ascension is also mentioned in one of the Bibles Luke 24:50-52, “Then Jesus led them out of the city as far as Bethany. There he raised his hands and blessed them. And as he was parting from them and being taken up into heaven. They bowed down to him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.”
As can be seen from biblical studies, Jesus' ascension has significant learning significance for Christians. In addition to the learning that can be gained through the Bible, the Ascension of Jesus also has some spiritual significance:
- Resurrection and Victory: Jesus' ascension confirmed his resurrection from the dead and his victory over sin and death. This inspired his followers with the hope of eternal life and strengthened their belief in his saving power.
- Power and Greatness: Jesus' ascension demonstrated his authority as the son of God who was given authority over all things, including life and death. This reinforced his position of favor with the Father.
- The coming of the Holy Spirit: Jesus promised his disciples the coming of the Holy Spirit after his ascension. The Holy Spirit is regarded as the helper who gives wisdom, strength, and guidance to his people to understand his truth and proclaim the gospel to the whole world.
- The Call to Mission: Jesus' ascension also reinforced the call to mission for his followers to be his witnesses throughout the world. They are called to spread the gospel and share the good news of salvation with all nations, following the example of Jesus Christ.
- Hope of the Return: Jesus' ascension promises His second coming at the end of time. This is the hope for Christians, who look forward to his coming to complete his plan of salvation and bring about his kingdom in power and glory.
Jesus' ascension, in the context of Christian belief, occurred after his death and is considered part of the divine plan of salvation. Jesus' death, which was accomplished through crucifixion, is believed to be His sacrifice for the sins of mankind, according to Christian teachings.
In the Christian view, His death had the profound purpose of atoning for the sins of mankind and enabling salvation for those who believe in Him. After His resurrection from the dead, Jesus' ascension occurred as the moment when He returned to His Father's side in heaven, confirming His divinity and beginning a new stage in His saving work. In the Christian theological view, Jesus' death and ascension were integral to God's overall plan of salvation for humanity.
In this sense, Jesus' ascension is not only a historical event, but also has deep spiritual significance for Christians. Through the moment of his ascension, Jesus affirmed his resurrection which brings the hope of eternal life to those who believe. Jesus' ascension strengthens belief in his divinity and gives Christians the strength to live a life of faith with hope for heaven.
