Advancing the Downstreaming of Innovation and Global Academic Literacy: Let’s Get to Know Scopus

25 Mei 2026

In an era of increasingly competitive academia, the number of research publications is no longer merely a measure of social prestige. Today, research has become the heart of scientific advancement and public literacy.

Research also plays a vital role in supporting a sustainable innovation ecosystem for nations and societies. Therefore, publication channels are needed to disseminate and downstream these research findings to the broader public. Among the many popular research publication platforms today, Scopus stands as one of the most respected within the global academic community. UNDIRA colleagues may often hear the name “Scopus” mentioned in academic discussions, but what exactly is Scopus?

Similar to SINTA and GARUDA, Scopus is one of the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific literature indexing databases and has earned internationally recognized credibility. Scopus was developed and managed by Elsevier, one of the leading research and scientific publishing companies from the Netherlands, in 2004.

However, unlike SINTA, journals indexed in Scopus are published according to internationally recognized standards and are integrated with databases such as Web of Science.

According to data published by the Institute for Educational Research and Publication, Scopus currently indexes more than 28,000 accredited scientific journals and publications from approximately 7,000 publishers worldwide.

Despite hosting a vast number of scientific journals, the requirements for publication in Scopus are widely regarded as highly demanding for academics. Scopus is known for its rigorous selection process and only indexes high quality, high impact journals and publications that have undergone intensive peer review processes. Furthermore, journals indexed in Scopus often become references for academics worldwide, thereby enhancing the reputation and academic standing of researchers and institutions alike. This is why being indexed in Scopus has become one of the major career milestones for many academics.

In addition to its peer review system, Scopus also evaluates journals based on several indicators, including DOI (Digital Object Identifier) diversity across published articles, plagiarism findings, Elsevier’s bibliometric assessments, and citation metrics recorded through SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) and CiteScore. Journals indexed in Scopus are categorized into four quartiles:

Q1: Contains journals with the highest citation counts and the strongest relevance within their respective fields.

Q2: High quality journals with significant relevance, generally ranked between 26–50.

Q3: Influential journals with relatively average citation performance, typically ranked between 51–75.

Q4: Journals indexed in Scopus but with lower relevance scores, generally ranked between 76–100.

For UNDIRA colleagues interested in accessing the Scopus index, it can be accessed through the officialScopus platform operated by Elsevier. However, unlike Google Scholar and SINTA, Scopus requires a subscription for full access to its journal content and publication database.

Scopus is not merely a database; it is a reflection of global scientific standards. For members of academia, being indexed in Scopus signifies that their intellectual contributions have transcended local boundaries and are actively contributing to global scientific discourse.

Amid Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its research standing on the international stage, understanding and pursuing Scopus indexing is no longer an exclusive ambition of academic elites. Instead, it has become a strategic objective that should be collectively pursued by the entire academic ecosystem of the nation — from researchers and journal managers to institutional leaders.

Research quality is a long term investment. And Scopus remains one of the most transparent and respected benchmarks of that investment.
